I have a 98 Fat Boy with 21 thousand miles that for the last couple of months has been giving me grief. Almost every time I go riding the engine will quit at least once either when stopped at a light or doing highway speed. When it quits when I am stopped it will start again after cranking for a little while. When it quits while doing highway speeds it will all of a sudden start again, it seems kind of like when you run out of fuel and then turn on reserve. One other thing, the engine will backfire, sometimes very loud now and then. I have checked the coil, changed the plugs and wires, drained the fuel tank looking for garbage which I found and corrected and it is still happening. I have had it in a good shop but they haven't been able to duplicate the problem after a week so I picked it up. On my way home it happened again. The bike runs well before and after these events. I am running a EV 27 cam, stock CV Carb, Hypercharger air cleaner and Vance and Hines exhaust, any thoughts?
I did drop the fuel bowel and accelerator pump and found no debris and also ran a tank of gas with carb cleaner but it didn't help. I guess I'll do a rebuild on the carb. I initially thought carb/fuel problem but the backfire made me think ignition system problem. Thanks
If it's not your only transportation, check things like lifters, valve springs, stuff like that. Oh, and of course your connections to the battery and ground(s).
Could be the ignition. Does it happen after it warms up a bit? If so take the cone cover off and spray some contact cleaner behind the trigger plate. That may clear it up.
Actually there have been a couple of times that when starting for the first time of the day it would not start right away. It would crank over but not start, a few minutes later it would start. When I am done riding I always turn off the fuel petcock. Maybe the remaining fuel is leaking out of the bowel and it tales a few minutes for it to fill back up after I turn it back on. There is no unusual noise and the rest of the electrical seems fine, lights stay on and starter cranks.
It only seems to happen after I have been riding for a while though there have been a couple of times that when starting for the first time of the day it would not start right away.
