I have a 2001 Electra glide (carbed), it has started to backfire when I downshift and start to slow down. Is this what is considered decal popping? Also I have noticed the exhaust pipe changing color at the point where the slip on meets the header pipe...a brown/blue color.
Backfiring can happen if you have a leak at the intake or exhaust. It's usually on the intake side, but can be the exhaust. Where you see discoloration may mean you have a leak at that joint.
As Scrambler said, it might be a tuning issue with the carb.
Have you made any other changes lately that would affect the mixture? Carburetors don't change their own jets. If you've made no other changes (new pipes, air cleaner, etc.), I'd suspect a manifold leak.
If your idle mixture is borderline lean to begin with, the onset of colder weather can aggravate deceleration popping. You might try going up one size on the slow jet and see if it helps.
Only time I had decell Backfire was when I had a muffler leaking and sucking air at the muff to header connection... redid the muffs to get a good seal and back firing gone..
Decell popping is not the same as Decell Backfiring...
Does sound like something has changed. I believe the browning to the pipe is being caused by additional heat. Maybe the carb isn't getting the fuel it needs so it's lean, causing more heat.
To clear the discoloration try this stuff. It's what I've used and had great results.
Thanks guys. As far as I know everything is stock on the bike. I just got it this summer and haven't had any issues with backfiring until the last couple weeks. I check out the connection/seal at intake and exhaist first.
