There are breeding populations of bald eagles in Virginia along the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay. You can see them at Mason Neck Wildlife Center in Lorton, Virginia pretty much anytime you visit. It's worth the ride down there. If you go, take some binoculars. They are sometimes soaring pretty high.
Don't see a lot of them around here, though they do have a couple of wintering nesting places near the lakes and rivers. Still, haven't seen too many of them over the years. But, in the last couple of years alone, I've seen four or five while riding the bike. Awesome site, and no better way to reinforce the freedom of the road than by seeing one of those majestic birds.
Danny, do you ever ride in the Keystone Lake area? Over the years I have see quite a few there.
Here in Colorado - mostly up in the mountains, we have both Bald & Golden Eagles - I was fly fishing on the Colorado river one day and watched one swoop down and catch a Brown trout right from the river - impressive....
They nest and breed here in Illinois too. A local guy ' rescued' two babies that fell from their nest-Got in all kinds of trouble with DNR,went to court and I think he's facing some jail time.
Hraefn. it would have been good if you would have had a dash cam you could have got a Picture from the Video.
I got one in my car & on my bike. runs all time, all I've been able to capture in 2 deer running across in front of me, locked up rear wheel & then blowed my horn, scary.
I recently moved from WA state to IN. I haven't seen anything here in IN yet, but bald eagles were an everyday occurrence in western WA. Driving to and from work, or anywhere. Hovering over my house looking for food and some occasionally getting chased by those little birds. It never got old. Below is a picture from Seabeck Bay. There was a little diner we went to for fathers day every year. This pic my dad was out and we couldn't have asked for a better day. There were a dozen Bald Eagles flying, eating and so forth. One bussed my dad about 5 feet above his head and scared the **** out of him. Then this Golden Eagle flew in for a chat with one of the bald eagles. I wish I had my SLR camera, but forgot it when we left the house. These were with my iPhone and you can see the golden landing and the Bald is just sitting there. They were hanging out for about 10 min until we got within 20 feet of them then they flew off. If I had my SLR I wouldn't have tried to get so close, but I really wanted a picture....lol!!

In April 2011 my wife, younger brother and I stepped out of a local restaurant in central FL and a bald eagle was screeching and circling over us as we got on the bikes. After an outdoor memorial service for another brother, same day about 1 1/2 hour later, we got on our bikes and as the Patriot Guard riders and us were leaving the sight of the service there was another bald eagle circling over all the riders carrying the cremains of my brother. Very awesome indeed.

To be sure!
I've spent a lot of time watching motorcyclist video bloggers on Youtube who ride with GoPros or other such setups, and I couldn't help but think how cool it would have been if I could have caught some footage of that eagle.
On the other hand, as someone above noted, such moments are gifts. And a bald eagle on New Year's Day seems particularly auspicious.
By the way, it's great to hear that bald eagles are doing well around the nation. The last time I saw one in Maryland was in 2003, just before Hurricane Isabelle came through. I know there are some nesting pairs in our state, but as I said above, they are not so numerous here as in other parts of the country.
