Harley Davidson The Legendary Models by Pascal Szymezak. Page 64-65 shows a 1932 45 -R series with those heads and that brace. These had the new Linkert carb but nothing really showing us much carb in your pic. The trottle lever arm does appear to be a Linkert "C"
Isn't flathead a broad term? The guy who won got the year right but just said 33 flathead when the actual model is a VL. Am I correct on this?

33 Flathead is overly broad. For '33 there were new models: VLE, VLD and CB. The VLD had magnesium alloy pistons(can't see obviously) and a Y-shaped manifold (pictured) and in late models it came with the Linkert carb instead of the Schelber carb. The pic has the updated manifold as well as the later carb on it.
