I think pulling in behind a single rider is fine. Just try to make sure they know you are there.
As far as pulling up to the end of a group. Well, I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you want to travel at their speed and take up a staggered position. Keep in mind you might be pulling in behind their sweep rider.
Either pull behind or pass em' - two bikes are easier for cars to notice than one bike, if you're not in a hurry just fall in line...shouldn't be a problem.
I havent been riding but a couple of years and the only group rides I have done was with the PGR. I'll tag on another rider if I see one riding my style, but I wont join a group of riders. I'll get close but I'll respect their group and pace a little back but close enough to enjoy the safety in numbers aspect. But thats just me right or wrong I figure that unlessi'm invited. I had better respect their group
I ride how I want - when I want...
Having said that - I almost never pull up behind another biker, cause if he goes down, I want to have enough room to react - same with a pack. I'll only ride close with riders that I know are good riders.
