Yes, listening to, and especially adjusting/tuning/selecting stuff on a sound box will distract a rider. Ain't no different than cagers doing the same type things - cell phones, even hands-free, have been shown to be distractive, same for stereos. Bottom line - ANYTIME you divert attention from scooter-jockeying to ANYTHING else, the possibility of bad stuff happening increases.
When I ride alone I use my mp3 player with ear buds, I set it on 30 and the player goes deep in my pocket..I never adjust it once I start out. I can still hear my exhaust and car horns etc. Am I distracted by the music? Nope..it really just replaces the wind noise, my entire focus is on riding. The words aren't going to distract me..as was said before if it were say sattelite radio and listening to Howard Stern or the news..then I could see it. I agree talking on a phone in a cage even with a headset is still no better than without..u just freed up one hand but depending on the conversation taking place your kinda in two places at once. Cellphones and driving to me almost same as dui.

Personally, the last thing I want to hear when I'm riding is a radio or music. Just my preference, but those are some of the everyday things I like to escape from when riding.
Just to clarify my previous post. I don't feel there's a thing wrong with a sound system in a car or on a bike. Personaly I have tried them and don't like them on a bike. However, I do feel that two way intercom systems on a bike are as much a distraction to a rider as a cell phone is to a cager.
I figure it could be dangerous if you're fiddling with the radio or looking at the display and not paying attention, but if you just have music playing, I don't see how it would affect me, aside from maybe being able to hear other noises... But the volume doesn't get loud enuf to drown everything out anyway.
