Found someone who does paint for a reasonable price. He reccommended buying the tins to put back on the bike if I sell later to keep the value. Also I wouldn't lose riding time while he worked. Thought this was a good idea. Where do I buy them and much are they? Is the dealer the only option?
Don't know how having a custom paint job on your bike would depreciate it's value (unless it's a butt-ugly paint job)...you might have a hard time finding "used" tins for a '07...maybe the earlier year tins will work??...give Steele's bike salvage a call (they're off Santa Fe Drive)...you might get lucky and save some $$$ [sm=smiley20.gif].
Not sure of the year of your bike, but I have to go with Manish_Hawg's suggestion. Check out eBay. Almost everything I've added to my bike since buying it (a whole 2 1/2 months ago...) has been off of eBay. In most cases I've saved myself a good load of $$. (Two dud purchases...but both my fault...didn't double check a stock number, and now I'm in the position of having to return the item atmy expense, to get the correct replacement...and bought some used heel/toe shift levers...big mistake...ended up paying OVER retail, they were scuffed, and didn't come with the bolts...total garbage...) I was just into the local HD dealer on Monday to get replacements for the heel/toe shifters, and was chatting with a guy at the counter about the lunacy of spending huge bucks to buy a bike, and then even more to snazz it up (we were both confirmed addicts it would appear...LOL), when I mentioned I bought a lot of my stuff off of eBay. When I said this, a young little chickie behind the counter said "I'd NEVER buy anything off of eBay!" I just popped my thumb back over my shoulder, pointing in the direction of my bike, and said, "Go look at the Fat Boy out there. Practically everything on it is from eBay, and I spent a helluva lot less doing it that way, than if I'd have bought it all here." Buddy beside me nodded, and she shut up. (The desired effect...LOL) I regularly see full sets of tins on eBay ranging in price from a few hundred dollars, to $1200 or so. (Depends on condition, colours involved, etc.) It is worth checking out anyway...
I'd say wait until winter and figure out what to do then. That thing is brand new. Put some miles on it, and if you still want paint in the winter get it then. Does it snow in your part of Colorado? I also agree with ebay for tins. I got a great deal on my black tins. Less than $500 for a full set for my 02.
