When the bike was newer, and stock, I couldn't ride under 2,300 without chugging the motor and losing power.

Harley's have a short rev range. I can basically ride between 1,800 and 4,000. I can accelerate through 5,500, but that not the norm. 1,800 through 4,000 is about average.

That is a very short range and I find myself shifting constantly with spirited riding. I don't think there's any way to avoid that outside of buying an inline 4 cylinder.

Frequent shifting through the twisties was annoying at first, coming from 4 cylinder sportbikes, but I got used to it and now it's not that big a deal.

Thankyou very much for the great reply, I was starting to worry that I was the problem. Very glad to have posted the question on this forum, your reply gives me great encouragement

The throttle response will be better, and the pull at lower rpm will definitely make you happy you did it. In addition, the new tune will make the air fuel ratio a little richer, and the bike will run cooler.
BEAUTIFUL, thankyou. Just the sort of real world advice I was hoping for, regards

The changes although subtle were very noticeable especially at the low end.
Very rarely do I have to downshift to first other than coming to a stop.

Post your thread on the Softail page.
You'll get a lot more recommendations.

Many thanks for sharing your experience, I will do as you suggest about the Softail page

aha, another mystery revealed, thanks for sharing the info, greatly appreciated

I stand by what I said earlier; a tuner and someone that knows how to tune will be the most cost effective solution to change the user experience where he is unhappy.
you hit the nail right on the head, newcomers like me aren't quite sure how the explain, I really appreciate your help.

I ride 2 up all the time so I just like to chug around when riding the neighbourhood. Any real world advice will be appreciated, because I am considering trading the bike on one of the Rushmore Project bikes that has taller gearing, david and dianne, Victoria Australia
There are so many different ways to go with a "Stage I". Most will get you more low end torque. Many will be very expensive. Many will make your MPG suffer. Most will make it run better at first, but as time goes by, you will slowly lose much of the initial improvement.

A good Stage I will give you more torque, not just in the low RPM's, but all the way thru the RPM band, will increase your MPG, will run cooler, and will increase the longevity of the engine.

Here is a Dyno Chart of a good Stage I on a Softail Heritage-

You can see more info on the difference between most Stage I's, and good Stage I's at this LINK

Waste of time. Make it sound right and leave it alone. I just pulled off my K&N and retuned the engine. Stage one does not much of anything except expense.
Its an HD and its not a racer. You want to go fast on an HD you gotta go all out.
It is what it is.

I can't vouch for the 103, But my 96''er didn't change much when I did the STG 1 with pipe, A/C, SERT turner and Dyno...

But when I added the Andrews 26H cam,, THAT made a MAJOR difference in low end TQ....

I know the 103 produces about the same stock STG 1 as my Cammed 96''er so I'd have to ride a newer bike to really give a better answer.
