I bought the harley model #70900070b speedometer/tach combo and it wouldnt go into set up mode, I'd hold in the trip meter and turn to acc and it would go straight into diagnostic mode. Harley replaced with a new unit and it is doing the exact same thing. I have searched and read every thread I could find on this and it seems to be a common problem but no one seems to mention if they ever got it sorted out and what they did to fix it.
Everything seems to work on the unit it just wont let me get in to set up and change colors etc and yesterday, after about a 100 miles the abs light came on. I have read and reread the instructions a hundred times, checked for bent pins and loose connections as per the trouble shooting guide and still having the same problem. I find it hard to believe that two brand new gauges are defective but cant seem to figure out what the problem is.
anyone have this problem and a solution? My dealership is awesome and they have said they will warranty it and get me a third unit but I'd like to make sure it's not something wrong with the bike. any ideas?
I also have a speedo/tach combo but a later model. These are the methods I use to access the different functions. Be aware of the position of the Stop/Run switch. If it doesn't say it should be on 'Run' then it should be off. Also, be aware of putting the ignition switch to either 'Accessory' or 'Ignition'. Keep in mind that my unit is for a 2012 Softail. I hope this helps.
Also, others have posted in the past about the ABS light illuminating when they don't have ABS. I don't recall the solution but my gut tells me the dealer has to clear it.
SETTING CLOCK ON SPEEDOMETER / TACHOMETER
1. Set ignition to accessory.
2. Press and hold the trip reset button.
3. Wait for 12hr or 24hr to flash and select. Press and hold the trip reset button again and the time will begin to flash. Using the trip button, toggle through the numbers and set your hour. When you have the hour set, press and hold the trip reset button again for minutes and follow the same procedure. When you have the minutes set your done.
4. Turn the ignition off.
SETTING COLORS ON SPEEDOMETER / TACHOMETER
1. Set ignition to accessory.
2. Press and hold both turns signals until setup flashes.
3. Press left turn signal to toggle forward and left turn signal to toggle backwards.
4. When desired setting is flashing, hold both turn signals until color code displays.
5. When the color code displays, hold the left turn signal for fine (slow) adjustment and the right turn signal for course (fast) adjustment.
6. When the desired color is set, hold both turn signals to save and return to step 3.
7. Turn the ignition off.
DIAGNOSTIC MODE
Harley Diagnostic Codes
To access codes
1. Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run. 2. Push odometer reset button in & hold. 3. Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word diag should then appear. 4. Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt"
Thanks so much for your help, Harley once again said the problem was the gauge itself... I really cant believe two brand new gauges had the exact same issue but they took it back and I upgraded to the Dakota Digital speedo/tach and it functions perfectly.

It does seem unusual that two new gauges have the same malfunction. I'm glad you found an alternate speedo/tach you like.

Honestly I thought for sure it has to be something with the bike. We checked and rechecked everything, took apart the connector to make sure nothing was bent or out of place, checked the trip button, tried every combo of trip/ acc / turn this turn that, press the turn signals, read and reread the instructions a million times. Both times after messing with it for hours I brought the bike to the dealer and they tried the same thing. Still nothing.
Luckily the guys in parts and service over at New Orleans Harley are great and really bent over backwards to help me out.
Install the tacho in other bike, and try enter in setup mode of tacho. Then you can see , if the problem is from bike or tacho.
I installed in my bike the same tacho, and run perfect.

Once the gauge has hit 31.1 miles it is "married" to that ecm/bike. If you try and mount it to another bike it will read VIN ERR and will not function properly. Our last ditch effort was to run each one past the 31.1 miles and see if it would work after it was "married" to the bike, neither did. Either way the gauge is now back in the hands of Harley so it's their problem now!

Mucktuck, welcome to the forum from central Texas. You responded to a 6 year old thread. Also, read the posts in the thread. SpaceReapersNOLA doesn't have that HD speedo anymore. He has a Dakota Digital gauge.
Furthermore, SpaceReapersNOLA hasn't been active on the forum since 2018. He won't get your advice.
