Default Question re. pricing/availability of certain HD parts

Something I found odd this weekend. I've been thinking about changing out the tank emblems on my 2005 RK and decided that I really like the look of the Night Train style. Looked and looked online and found some on ebay etc but the price on them was crazy expensive.

So I was at the dealership this weekend and just happened to mention to the parts guy what I was experiencing and he goes, "Well I can order you those right here". Looked up the part numbers and ordered them right there for ~25 bucks per side.

I took the part numbers he used and plugged them into the HD Parts site and it comes back "Part Number could not be found"

Are there certain items that can ONLY be ordered from a dealer? If so .... How come?

I don't trust the parts guys. They often don't know what the hell you're talking about,or what the hell they're looking up. When I go to the parts counter, I bring THEM the part number that I need.

I've also found that the parts finder on the HD website isn't so good at finding hard parts. I'd look up the part on Ronnie's Parts Finder, then see about ordering it through them through Boardtracker, or Surdyke.

Report back and tell us what you find!

For all its visual panache, I don't find the HD site particularly fast or accurate when it comes to finding things.

That's because it is geared towards accessories and not hard parts.

thats because oem parts are not listed on the p&a website, or catalog.

you want accessory parts? use the p&a catalog/website. you want oem parts? use one of the parts microfiche sites, i like granite state harley myself: http://www.granitestateharleystore.c...partfinder.htm

The police models still have the square mirrors, if you didn't find them yet.

Yes but they are the long stem mirrors and I want the short stem mirrors like what came stock on bikes before these new teardrop mirrors of today.
