It happened again!! This is the 3rd time my bike has been seriously affected by the rain/wet roads. I have a carbed 02 SG, which has been rejetted and has SE pipes, and a Ness Big Sucker air cleaner which has been serviced and oiled.... and while riding home last night it started to sputter and choke out. Like I stated above its happened to me before and its about as dangerous as it gets trying to keep it from stalling out.
Any thoughts out there????
If the bike runs great when it's dry and sputters in the rain, then you need to look at your air filter setup to see if it's sucking in water. No Idea what a ness big sucker looks like and if it runs with an exposed filter element or not.
A Std. S&S cover or a Std. HD cover on a Carb will work fine in the rain. It has nothing to do with fuel injection....
I'd try starting it up in the driveway and letting it idel. Hit the the aircleaner /cover with a spray bottle of water till you find the part of the filter that is exposed and sucking in the water. Then come up with a way to cover the exposed part of the filter.
Buy a can of wire dry spray. When this happens stop and squirt some wire dry on the sensors and wiring on the front of the motor. Do one area at a time and work your way back over the rest of the bike until you've located the problem area.
I highly doubt it has anything to do with a fuel or air filter issue even if it was an open element system it would have to be downpouring hard before you'd see any prob with this area.
Thanks for the opinions guys. Though I doubt its anything electrical because I can control the problem with the throttle. Its gotto be a problem with the air filter. As I stated above, the problem occured firstwithout the chrome cover on the filter and then last night with the cover on it. There is water getting in there somehow. I do have a round cover without an open slot at the bottom (the football has one). I'm thinking it could be restricting air flow along with letting water in??

Push your spark plug wires all the way down. Sounds like water is getting between the wire and plug. I had the same problem happen a few years back when I owned my 01 sporty.
