Default Does a Harley-Davidson dealership have to do 1000mi service?

I just hit 1k on my 16 FLHTCU. The dealerships are telling me that HD recommends that the 1K service be performed by a dealership (~$400).

I like to do my own servicing and feel comfortable with doing these myself. Does this interfere with the warranty?

Seeking advice from the experts on this forum, thanks

No!

I have had 24 Harley's. Never paid the dealer to do a service. I document what I did by pictures. The bike's odo reading, The service manual, tools and materials used. Then I write a list of each check required for the particular service and file it away. Never had any question from a dealer at all with the few warranty claims that I have had.

Yes, the service is not complicated for 99% of the population. Most checks can be done in the time the oil is draining.

No manufacturer can require anyone to have their dealers do the work ar use their products unless they do it for free.

Yes, the MOCO recommends that a dealer perform the first service.

Will it void your warranty if you or an Indy shop does the service? Absolutely not. Break out those wrenches and have fun, just keep your receipts for oil, filter etc.

You should have made them include the first several services into the purchase deal. Of course that is after the price of the bike is agreed upon.

I just turned over 700 miles on my new bike. I considered letting them do my first service, but decided to do it myself.
It's not hard and I don't like to pay thru the nose to have someone do it for me.
Everyone says to keep your receipts incase you need to prove it was done.

I don't have the tools and know how on the new bikes to mess with them. On my bikes in the 70s, I did everything. So yeah, they did mind and will continue to.

Hell no.

I have had more too many problems dealing with some Harley dealers.

I'll do it myself, thanks.

If it was required by Harley to keep the warranty, they would have to do it for free. Magnusson-Moss and all that.

NO.. but IMO it could help you if ever have a Warranty issue.. I had the dealer do the full 1k for around $250; then on the next three, I'd change the oisl myself, take it in and have the dealer do all the other checks at 5k 10k and 15k-- all three of those was about $180 -$190 per;..

Since then I do what I can and then our local indy does the rest..
