It was interesting watching car's coming up on the bikes in the left lane at a higher speed and being forced to brake and then attempt to go around pass in the middle lane. Staying in the back I had a good view of cars and bike in that traffic pattern. It appeared to me to be a dangerous way to travel. As a retired LEO I have some opportunities to observed some poor driving choices and think this was dangerous.
Which part of this have you never seen before?
Two bikes riding side-by-side in the lane? That's pretty common and legal in GA.
People on bikes with no helmets? That's legal in several states but not legal in GA. It still happens in states with helmet laws.
Hogging the left lane? I see that going on just about daily. Bikes, cars, big rigs, young, old, men, women,... It's nothing unusual at all.

You are a retired LEO? Did you spend your career behind a desk? Do you travel our highways very often? I just don't understand your never having seen this type of thing before and your apparent surprise that it happened.

nice little rant, but regardless of whether or not the left lane campers are doing at or above the speed limit, they are still breaking the law by camping. 2 infractions here in la, one: impeding the flow of traffic and two: left lane is for passing, pass then move back into right lane.

Think of the left lane like a bathroom, get in there, do what you gotta do, and get out!

I started driving in 1974, in NY. The first time I ever got pulled over, was by a Connecticut State Trooper on I95. He asked me if I knew why he pulled me over. I said "No. I was going the speed limit." He said "Exactly. Get out of the left lane, It is for passing only."

Many passholes speed up when you try to pass them. How do you explain that? Last week a twenty someting in a small sedan was doing 65, in a 70 mph zone, in the left lane. When I tried to pass him he sped up to 85. I passed him with my truck, and when I looked in my rear view mirror he was giggling like a girl. He's lucky I have responsibilities in life or my temper might have gotten the best of me.
"Passholes". I like it.

How about: if you're not actively passing someone, get the hell out of the left lane. It's not for cruising. It's for passing. Hence the term "passing lane". It's not rocket science.

State "Keep Right" Laws.

http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/right.html

The Uniform Vehicle Code states:
Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic ...
This law refers to the "normal" speed of traffic, not the "legal" speed of traffic. The 60 MPH driver in a 55 MPH zone where everybody else is going 65 MPH must move right. Contrast Alaska's rule, 13 AAC 002.50, allowing vehicles driving at the speed limit to use the left lane, and Colorado rev. stat. 42-4-1103, prohibiting blocking the "normal and reasonable" movement of traffic.

This line of thinking is the problem, and it infuriates me.

I have no empirical evidence to back this up, but I am 100% convinced that the overwhelming majority of accidents on interstate highways are caused not by excessive speed, but rather are a by-product of erratic lane changing, which is often associated with drivers trying to get around slower moving cars. Often those slower moving cars are occupying the left lane.

If I'm in the left lane, I am actively involved in passing a vehicle in a lane to the right of me, after which time I move back to the right. If there aren't cars behind me, I may make the pass leisurely. If there are cars behind me, I make the pass as quickly as I reasonably can, then get the hell out of the way.

If anyone has ever driven in Europe, particularly in Germany, you notice they obsessively keep to the right. They virtually never pass on the right. They drive very fast, but it is very orderly, and feels much safer.

Finally, I love the term "Passholes". I'm stealing it, and intend to use it at every opportunity.

Left lane blockers are just insecure passive/aggressive types playing a control game to get their kicks, can't say I haven't pulled a few dangerous and defiantly illegal stunts just to screw with and scare the **** out of a few of the more deserving ones. Mellowed a lot living in the bay area left laners and doing 5 to 10 under the limits seems to be the regional sport out here.

This left lane controversy shouldn't even be a topic.

Learning what it is for is like learning what a stop sign is for or a yield or whatever you should have leaned before you even got a license to drive.

Common knowledge.....
...or supposed to be.
