Seems to me they keep kicking the can down the road here.

Of course they do. It can go years as long as defendants continue to waive their rights to a speedy trial and clog the system with postponements, pre-trial motions and continuances.
Not to mention that over time, witnesses move and maybe can't be contacted, their memories fade or they die off also evidence degrades or is lost or mishandled. There are so many things that can affect a solid murder case and the defense will strive to take advantage of all of them. But I hope this one has a proper ending with the guilty parties all swinging at the end of a rope in the town square.
...over an open fire!

Cut and paste from DA Lawson's email to me dated 10-10-17
John,
Where do I begin? As of today, Monday, we are a go for trial at the end of the month. The defense has filed a Motion for Continuance. Judge Copeland has taken their Motion under advisement and we should have his decision tomorrow (Tuesday).
I have opposed their Motion for Continuance. However, due to circumstances that we never could have predicted, a continuance might be necessary.
As we had previously discussed, Ronnie Robinson and his wife were being represented by the same attorney, which I had a major problem with. I notified their attorney that I would be willing to offer Elsie Robinson a better deal if she would be willing to cooperate and testify against her husband. Once I made that offer, I created a conflict that made it impossible for him to represent both of them. He could not advise one of his clients whether or not they should testify against the other. So on September 29, Elsie Robinson fired her attorney. She then made application to be represented by the Missouri State Public Defender’s Office. That afternoon when law enforcement went to talk to her, she told them that she wasn’t going to talk to them until she is assigned an attorney. Which was understandable.
However, on Monday, October 2nd the Missouri State Public Defender’s Office put judges and prosecutors on notice that the ENTIRE public defender’s system is overworked and they are not accepting any new clients. Basically they have gone on strike, despite not being allowed to do so by law. The Missouri criminal justice system has been in utter chaos for the past two weeks. Lawsuits are being considered. Judges are threating to hold public defenders in contempt and lock them up.
As angry as I am with the public defenders for this latest stunt, what pisses me off the most is the fact that Elise Robinson hasn’t been assigned an attorney, which needs to happen before she will speak with law enforcement.
Of course there is always the possibility that, after she gets an attorney, she decides not to flip on her husband. So this is why I think I will have to agree to a continuance. I need to know what Elsie Robinson is going to do. If she flips… great. If she doesn’t, I will refile my motion to try her and her husband at the same time. Ronnie Robinson is a bad guy who did the really bad stuff. Other than being there, I don’t have a lot to specifically pin on Elsie Robinson. You and I know that in the eyes of the law they are just as guilty as the other for acting in concert together. However, juries tend to be more sympathetic towards women. I want the same jury that decides Ronnie’s fate to decide Elsie’s. My goal is that they will be so enraged at Ronnie that they won’t give any mercy on Elsie.
So despite the fact that my subpoenas are served and despite the fact that I have spent every Saturday and Sunday for the past month (and today which is a holiday) in my office working on this case, I need to know what Elsie Robinson is going to do before I try Ronnie. And with the way things are going right now, I don’t see that issue being resolved in the next week.
