Angry What would cause this kind of paint damage?

Hi all, new poster here. I bought my first bike 2 months ago, a 2010 Sportster 883 low. Been having a lot of fun with it.

Today I noticed a bunch of paint chips on the front right hand side of the fuel tank. They are only located on one side of the tank so I don't think it's simply normal paint chips accumulating overtime... especially since I've only put 700 miles on it so far and they weren't there when I bought the bike. All I know is it's not the key. It's not even close to reaching the tank.

Do you guys have any idea what could cause this? Gotta say I'm pretty pissed off. It's not like the bike was in pristine condition when I bought it but still, this makes it look like I dropped it :/

Thanks.

Is there any other similar damage elsewhere.

Those are pretty typical rock chips. Maybe you were riding behind a semi carrying a load of rock. It his a bump and unleashed a handful of gravel on the right side of where you were riding in the lane.

Heck, finish the summer out. Pull the tank. Repaint it in about a day. If you're not a painter...go to harbor freight, get a Gun from them and learn. It aint that hard.

Do you have any signs of leakage on your Master Cylinder? Since it's also on the right side just above the tank.

They might have been there when you bought it, those colored waxes can hide a lot of paint flaws.

Did you happen to park near where someone else decided to do a "burn out"?

No front fender and riding in the rain . Or riding on a wet white line in the road

Hmm I think I know what happened. I don't have a garage so my bike stays outside all the time. Because of that I tend to give it a quick wash every couple days. I read that you can use windex to clean the chrome so I've been using that and I've been using the same rag to wipe off water spots off the rest of the bike...

So I've been basically rubbing windex on my paint every couple days and it just ate away at the wax.

Live and learn I guess...

Thanks for the quick replies.
