As said earlier there are a lot of great deals on used bikes in the North Texas area. If you end up going the used route take a look at Motorcycle Trading Company in Arlington (by the old Six Flags mall). They've got a great selection.

If you're going to buy new now's pretty good time since you can find some deals on 2016's with the 2017's being released this week.

Lots of good advice about deciding what type of riding you want do. The bottom line is pick out a bike that suits you and your riding style.

If you have your endorsement and want to test ride the whole line of bikes the H-D Demo truck will be at Longhorn H-D on the 26th and 27th with the 2017s. If you do decide to stop by please introduce yourself; my wife and I are running registration table both days.

Good luck on your search!

I believe that the most important thing when choosing a bike is finding one that "fits" you.
The better the fit and the more comfortable that you are, the more enjoyment you'll get from the bike.
Once had a Wide Glide. It looked great but was literally painful to ride. Bought an FXR and it was awesome x 10.

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to ride everything for the time it takes find that perfect fit. Good thing is that you can change virtually everything on the frame to better suit you. Seats, bars, controls, just costs $$$$$!

According to the rumor mill, Harley is suppose to release a new engine in certain touring models for 2017.

If I was you I'd wait until the 2017 models drop and then decide. You can always buy used. The used market is flooded with clean low mileage bikes, many with factory warranty remaining. They're priced thousands less than msrp. Many have pipes and other accessories.

What feels comfortable sitting on a bike, or even on a 30 minute test ride, may end up being miserable after four hours.

If it were me, I'd go with a late model, low mileage used bike. Like others have stated, people dump $1000's of dollars into aftermarket goddies, stick the bike in their garage, it sits there for a year until the wife orders it sold, and you, the buyer walk away with a smoking bike at a fraction of the cost of new. All that aftermarket stuff is worthless upon resale. Well, not worthless, but you literally get pennies on the dollar when you sell. So you get it for almost free.

Next year I hope to add a Road Glide to my garage, and it won't be a new one.

But... Do your homework. Like find out who serviced it, talk to the people from the dealership if the previous owner worked with them. I would avoid performance engine mods, except for maybe exhaust, intake and a tuner. If they have opened up the engine to make it go faster, I would move on down the road.

Best of luck and welcome to the addiction!

Thank you all. I bought a 2009 street glide, one owner with only 4000 miles on it.
