Got me my leathers yesterday and silly me forgot to ask about waterproofing and protection. Just wondering what some of you folks here use / recommend?
Just an opinion, but to me leather is pretty much useless in the rain. It'll stand up to a mist or a minor shower, but if the skies open up you're going to get soaked and it will waterlog no matter what you put on it. (And I've tried a lot of stuff over the years.) My unscientific opinion is that waterproofing will only hold the sweat in more; it doesn't really keep the wet out.
If you got good leather, then just wear it. Once in a while you can use a cleaner on it. Lately I've been using Kiwi "Fast acting cleaner" which seems to be the same stuff that comes in the S-100 can for cleaning the bike. Spray on/wipe off. If it starts to fade and you're the type who thinks that's a bad thing a little leather dye will fix it up in no time.

We've had horses since we were married. Lost our last horse in November 06.
Carol was riding several years before we got married. I think she was 12. Saddles, bridles, reins, all made of leather.
Saddle Soap to clean, and Mink Oil to protect.
Don't use harsh cleaning products on the leather. They will pull the natural oils out of the leather. Treat the leather right and it will last a lifetime. Anybody need some saddles?
I have always used good leather treatment, usually bought from a tack shop. Our leather always look very healthy, and feels great wearing them.Griot's Garage has some of the best treatment available.
