On my Springer I've noticed that the light on my gas gauge comes on when it has close to 1 gallon of gas left. Although that might be helpful to some, since I know what my mpg is, I go by my odometer reading to know when to fill up rather than when the light on my gauge comes on.
It seems to vary. On my 06 RKC, if it was on E and the light came on, you better be finding you a damn gas station. Quick. It'd start sputtering and stalling when decelerating and when filling up would hold just about every bit of the 5 gallon tank.
On the 14 Limited, on E and the light comes on, by habit I immediately find a gas station (being used to the RKC), pull up and find that the 6 gallon tank only holds about 4.5 ish gallons. Recently the light came on at 200 miles. I ran it to 234 and put in 5.19 gallons.
That being said, I always reset the trip meter when filling up. Don't pay much attention to the gas gauge. I've put enough miles on metric bikes that don't have a gas gauge to just get used to doing it that way.
