Going through my back yard? I will be doing a similar ride next June, Sault Ste. Marie to Bar Habor.[/QUOTE]

Maybe see you in Bar Harbor, that is on our destination list, our trip is also in June, no exact day set yet but leaving the Green and Gold on a Friday either the 16th or the 23rd, first beer in Bar Harbor is on me

I'd rather ride back roads than the superslab. Many times we have seen things that would have gone unnoticed if we had taken the interstate.
We have always ridden 45 to 50 mph, no matter where we were going. If I get a vehicle behind us, I just pull off and let them go. Don't want a 'mad' cager that is in a hurry behind us. Now, if there is rain on the horizon in the
direction we are heading or we need to go, I'll hit the
nearest superslab to go on fast. Other than that, I plan the "ride" not the destination..........
That's great if you have the time but if you are heading out on a multi state trip then the Interstate is the best bet. Just getting out of Texas can take all day. Several trips we have taken we don't make it out of the state the first day.
The last trip we took was this past June. 4100 miles. Out of the 12 days on the road 3 of it was all Highway. But in between was spectacular.

Of the 22K miles ridden in the past year roughly 20% were on interstate. I run the interstate to get to the roads I haven't ridden before. Fun to me means wearing the WHOLE tire out, not just the spot in the middle like most guys do. I do rides for the sake of riding on fun roads, but some trips such as traveling to business conferences are destination based and I have to balance travel time with specific dates I have to be someplace.

If timing is right I'll take you up on that. Booth Bay and Laconia are other stops.

I rode 24,8xxx mile this year, about 30% interstate. I'm usually around 24K each year, last year it was 27, my highest so far.

I was telling my wife about this thread and she asked if I had shared the story of my longest drive/ride in a relatively short amount of time.

Perhaps someday I'll share all of the details but this is the abbreviated version.

In '92 in July, '92 I left Michigan after work on a Friday afternoon.
The "plan" was for me to meet my wife in Medford, OR on the following Friday.

I was trailering my '92 Heritage (and a cargo trailer) on my motorcycle trailer and headed towards California. Somewhere along the way I changed my mind and detoured to Moab, UT, arriving there early on Sunday morning (only taking naps as needed). This was approximately 1615 miles.

After locating a place to store my "rig" I unloaded the cargo trailer and bike and the plan was to find a motel, rest up and leave for Oregon on Monday morning. However, the weather was perfect and after being in a car for nearly two days, riding the bike was really refreshing!

I figured, okay, I'll do maybe one tank of fuel ad then pack it in for the day, have a few beers and lay out by the pool. This turned out to be the same thought that I repeated to myself all day long!

I ended up in Winnemucca, NV just in time to get a Big Mac before the Mickey D's closed!
I got a room, carried my stuff in and got a beer out of my cooler, the called my wife to tell her where I was (didn't go over too well)!

I woke up the following morning with two bites taken out of the Big Mac and as many sips of beer out of the can, laying on top of the fully made up bed, still fully dressed.

The run from Moab, UT to Winnemucca was approximately 585 miles, and that my friends will NEVER happen again!

We were extremely lucky on all counts. Police, **** breaks and gas fills. Had energy bars in the windshield bags and water on the sides.
Just hauling to make time.

Yeah Mike, I know what you and bettingpython mean. The wifey doesn't get that much time off from work right now. I just kinda plan trips in the 3 to 500 mile range. Three or four days at vacation time means 1100 to 1500 miles, but we still hit most side roads and indirect routes to our motel.
I will admit, back when the Grandson was 2 to 5 years old and we were 'down the road', I'd hit the closest hi-speed highway to get back to see the little boy as soon as possible. Alas now, he is 12 and interested in 'girls'.

I try to stick to somewhere between 400 and 500 miles a day. I've done more, and I've done less. On a multi-day ride if I do say , 550 miles one day, I will try to plan for close to 400 the next. By the same token, if I ride 350 miles one day, I might try for 600 the next. That's about all I can take until I am squirming in the saddle wanting to get off the bike.

My annual trip to Ak every spring from NH I try to put 600 behind me on the first day, then i will back off to 450 for the rest of the trip. Make sure i get a good nights sleep (which is easy after that run) then I can do some sight seeing. Last yr i rode route 66. That was fun to look at all the old buildings.
