I recommend not taking 40 to Barstow & 15 to San Diego. It's all freeway but traffic from Barstow to SD.
Instead: Head west on 40 then take Hwy 95 south before Needles. Take 95 across I-10 and follow to Blythe. You'll pass Glamis Sand Dunes. Hwy 78 to El Centro. I-8 west to San Diego. It's desolate but no traffic. Desert stops 15 miles west of El Centro. It's mountains 4000 ft elevation most of way to SD. It's also very scenic. No traffic until you hit SD. But it won't be bad on a Saturday.
Enjoy your trip to Americas Finest City.
95 might be best. 40 traffic isn't bad through Barstow, but 15 can be whole other story. Plus 95 is a more direct route, might cut some time. Dunno about the weather and such along there.
^^^ Or you could take the 10 to Palm Desert. Then take the 74 to the 371 to the 79 to the 15. This is the way I drive back from AZ. Once you get into altitude in the mountains on the 74, you will get cooler weather. It's also a nice ride.
