Calling All UTAHNS!!!!!! Help
Try this link to MSN weather for St George, UT. It gives you the averages day by day. It can get warm but not like you get in Missouri, since the air is pretty dry. PM me if you want to hook up when you get here.
First thing to know is that you'll make some significant elevation changes on a ride like that. Hurricane (pronounced Her-a-kun) sits at about 3000 feet in elevation and Torrey is at 6800 feet. Between Boulder and Torrey you'll hit the the Aquarius Plateau, and more importantly you'll run right along the east side of the plateau at elevations reaching over 8000 feet. Boulder Mountain is over 11,000 feet, so that will give you an idea of the elevation changes you can expect.
What that means is you will see significant shifts in temperature as you ride. A difference of 20 degrees is not uncommon at that time of the year. You can literally ride from burning desert to Alpine forest in the matter of 30 minutes.
June around Hurricane and St. George area will hit high 90s pretty easy. Also remember that the humidity will be very low (especially compared to Missouri). Humidity down around 10% is not uncommon. That means that not only can the heat zap you but you can get dehydrated very quickly. Riding at 55 to 65 mph in 90+ degree, ultra low humidity will pull the water right out of your system.
At the highest elevations there will still be some snow on the ground. But that is only to remind you of the elevation and that it still gets cool at night. Remember to layer and take plenty of items so that you can add or take off as you need.
The run up Highway 89 is very nice, and you'll start climbing by the time you get to Orderville. The day time temperature for June is usually very decent the rest of the way with highs in the 80s. Lows for that time of the year will drop to the 60s and lower, depending on elevation. The lack of humidity means the air will not hold the heat, so after the sun goes down the temps do drop quickly.
