HD Customer Service just sent me an email.

"spoke to the Dealership regarding your Sportster, and they said it is the clutch " Plates " that were bad.
When plates burn, they are considered a " wear item " , just like brake pads, and aren't considered a manufacturing defect, so they aren't warrantable."

Am I to believe that around 2,500 miles clutch pads needs replacing on Sportsters? So I guess in addition to the 5,000 mile interval service I'll need to replace 2 sets of clutch pads during that same period.

I would go back to HD. Make sure they are clear on the mileage and that the dealer has already falsely claimed to be in contact with HD. Of course it's a wear part, but that mileage is unheard of.

Next is take the bike to a certified indy or different dealer and get a second opinion.

I contacted HD Customer Services and let me just say I am very disappointed with HD. This is my very first Harley and for them to think 2,500 miles is acceptable for clutch plates to wear out is reasonable and thereby deny having it replaced under warranty. Bullshit! Clutch plates don't wear out under normal wear and tear after 2,500 miles! I am pissed enough to sell the ****ing thing and go back to Japanese or German bikes.

Since they did the 1,000 service they are claiming this all happened in 1,500 miles.

And the fun just keeps on going. I received a call from the dealer and what I thought was going to be a call that my bike was ready for pickup is now more bad news. After replacing the clutch plates the noise continues. They can't pinpoint the cause of the sound so tomorrow they are going to use some type of listening device to pinpoint the problem. I truly hope they aren't going to have to teardown the engine. This sucks! It's my first Harley and I was looking forward to a great experience and now I have nothing but doubts about its reliability. I just want the bike back so I can trade it in on another bike from another manufacturer. I realize s**t happens, but I don't want to worry that it's going to breakdown every time I take it out for a ride.

I see it falling into one of the two following scenarios:

1) You don't know how to use your clutch properly.

2) You don't need your clutch replaced, you just got "upsold", techs like myself, do that to you unsuspecting customers on a daily basis. That being said, have YOU seen your plates?

We posted within seconds of each other, as I thought, you didn't need your clutch replaced.

Definitely not one, I've been riding since the 70's and never had a clutch go out on me except on my dirt bikes around 30,000+ miles. As for 2, I haven't been to the shop today to see for myself.

I'm not so sure about your dealer. If you pull the clutch cover, you can smell a burnt clutch but you would have had to slip the every loving crap out of it to burn it up. Nobody can look at a clutch and say it's out of spec. Not sure what's going on.

At this point the clutch is the least of my worries. Now I am concerned they’ll tear apart the engine. They are supposed to call me tomorrow to let me know what is making the sound and the fix. They also said I am covered by warranty so no cost to me. If they have to touch the engine I am going to have them hold off until after I have a chance to talk with an attorney. I need to find out my rights and what are my legal options.
