Earlier poster mentioned the magic words... Fuel injection should be "closed loop"! Company called Thundermax makes 'em. Guess what my HD is getting? That's right. Closed loop fuel injection. Not exactly cheap, but to me, just makes more sense. As soon as it is finished, I will let you know what I think, in my typical no holds barred fashion. I am hoping that it will be a good report!
Props to my buddy Storm for the hookup with the shop doing the work!
I understand people who are not comfortuable with computer to like carbs. That is cool. You probably still buy stamps and write checks too. It's all good. I on the other hand have not written a check in 3 years and last time I bought a book of stamps, Clinton was president.
I can work on a carb as well as the EFI. The 06 and older Open Loop EFI is mediocre in my opinion. However the new Closed Loop system should really bring things around. EFI is here to stay.
As the Borg would say "Resistance is futile."
I still use a horse and buggy, automobiles to dang complicated,

I hear you dude ! I had my 96 build to a 103 indy build. I took the SE race tuner off. When I did the build I had a Thundermax with A/T put on my 07 Fxwg. It has closed loop oxygen sensors. I really like the Thundermax A/T. It can adjust itself to elevation conditions. Its the best tuner on the market at the present.
I like theeasy cranking of the Fuel Injection. Throttle response, and fuel milage. If a FI bike is kept in its maintenance schedules you will spend money on scheduled maintenacne but won't break down with fuel quick disconnect leaks and stuff.
As we were talking on the forum I head the UPS truck I jumped up and the UPS man was at the door.
I called my builder tuesday and ordered a Thundermax for my buddy's 07 Street Bob. Got a good price on it too.
Were gonna put it on this weekend. My buillder had the Tm preloaded with the changes made to his new 07 bike already mapped in it.
So except for the installation, all we will have to do is initilize the unit and ride it. The unit tunes itself. No dyno time needed.
You can control the idle control, rev limiter, free software upgrades. and self adjusting fuel maps. You can use nitrous with the unit too.
3 yr warranty.
The Thundermax is the performance product of the year too.
I run the Daytona Twin Tech TCFI II closed loop system, that I tuned myself. Easy starts both hot and cold, set A/F differently throughout the rpm nd throttle ranges for good mpg. Being able to monitor through downloads to loging software all A/f and timing info (infinitely adjustable). I would NEVER go back to carb unless there was a bike I realy wanted and that was all that was available. What I dont miss about carbs (and I had plenty of them):
floats sticking - gas runing everywhere
flooding over when hot, miserable starting
rejetting everytime I made a mod to the bike
losing little parts while tearing the carb apart (again)
forgetting to push the choke in all the way and fouling a plug
and a lot of other miseries that I have forgotten about
Being new to Harleys all this is interesting. But when did HD start using EFI? What was the first year it was available? Sounds as though they sold both carbed and EFI at the same time depending on the buyer's preference. How long did that go on? If I understood all this correctly 2005 was the last year a carbed one could be ordered. Also that 2006 and older EFI models were open loop and the 2007 are closed loop. I'm looking tobuy a used Dyna and would like to know what to look for. If the 06 and older EFIs aren't reliable I would rather find one with a carb.
I think the only disadvantage to an EFI model is you can't push start it.
I use to have a carbed Toyota Corolla and I took it in to Jiffy Lube for an oil change. The guy working there told me my fuel injectors were dirty and needed to be cleaned and they would glady do it for $50. I didn't even bother to call him an idiot and a liar. That was 10 years ago.

Hmmm ! Got a 07 Wg, battery went dead. I pushed it up the hill and going down the hill I turned the key switch on, jumped in the air and put it in gear and it cranked right up. So don't know where the push start theory come in at.
