Default Setup Fees

Does the MoCo pay the dealers for setting up the bikes? I thought I seen that on a thread or two on the forums. I was at a dealer and was talking to them about a custom paint '18 Limited. They wouldn't budge on the price or freight/setup. I said, I thought the MoCo paid you for setup. He said no. I may have misunderstood. I went in with Invoice and MSRP prices and said, I'm not paying you $13K over invoice. They were asking $35,400 for it.

2018 Custom Paint Limited

The salesman lied to you. The MoCo does, in fact, take care of "set-up" fees. There is no way in hell, the MoCo would allow any new unit to be delivered "unfit for service." They're liability level would be an attorney's dream. Another reason nobody buys bikes "in-the-crate" anymore.

It sounds to me like you went in prepared with knowledge. This is good. Since the bike you are wanting may be a limited paint run, you may be stuck paying way over MSRP as demand for custom paint should be more than regular paint colors. (And certainly more than "cheap gloss black.") Operative word here is "should." Whether it is or it isn't, only the supply & demand market will dictate that.

Now, if the dealership thinks they can get $35,400 for it from someone, relatively quickly, then the ball is in their court. Not much you can do about that scenario.

If custom paint is what you want, then just get a cheap black bike and get the tins (and plastic) painted in the colors YOU chose. It would certainly be "one of a kind."

Good luck and safe riding.

Thx bud...! It is what I thought, and they were playing their game and that's fine, that's what they are in the business to do. I am prepared like you said just in case. :-) The bike did catch my eye, but not even close enough to part with $35K for it. But if/when I come across a deal I'm happy with.... who knows... all bets are off...

I also found this thead on this forum with some good info

I've never understood setup and delivery fees in either motorcycle or car sales. Seems to me if you ar ein car or motorcycle sales, it is just a cost of doing business.

How is that a custom paint job? It's a black bike according to the picture you linked to.

You have to go through the pics and look at the close up ones. If you look at the close-up of the gas tank and saddle bag you can see what they did It has ghosted stripping and Harley Davidson in it. They also "claimed" it is not the Vivid Black, that it was some "other" black. I couldn't tell that.

Yep, exactly what I told them. I said for a bit more I can get a CVO and then I have a 117, heated seat and all the other bling already on the CVO.

I did. That's not a thirteen thousand dollar paint job and add ons. Plus the vin will always say it is a standard model which book value and loan value will not be anywhere near that price which almost that of CVO

Somebody with more money than sense is going to buy it though.
