Anybody ever shot a clear coat over top of denim? When I was looking at new bikes I was on the fence about the denim paint. I had a salesman tell me that if I decided i didn't like the denim I could always clear over it. Just wondering what it would look like.
Salesmen will tell you anything. I have not dealt with this particular paint. In the past I have used clear on primared finishes, rat rods, street rods, etc.. When clear coating those finishes I used a flattener agent to make the clear coats either a flat or semi gloss finish. Staright clear will make it a glossy finish. To get an Idea of clear over the denim, either get it wet with some soapy water to make it sheet or stretch somecling wrap over a section.
Yeah, I'm not putting any stock in what the salesman said. It just got me thinkin. At first glance the denim looks to have more texture than a regular base coat, but I was lookin closely at mine last night and I don't really think is does. I may try the cling wrap idea, I've never thought of that before.
Funny that this post came up, at the midwest rally this past weekendJB and I was looking at the blue demim bike and I said, well I guess if you got tired of it you could always clear coat it.
I don't know about the Denim paint specifically but I've used flat black and clear coated it with lacquer when I didn't have any gloss black spray paint and didn't wanna run to the store. Works pretty good. Hell, even over black primer. Of course, none of that was on an $18,000 motorcycle either.
I was told that it will over time gain shine like jeans wear with shinney places. I have no idea if that is true or not. But you can get it wet to see what it would look like clear coated.
That's kinda what I was thinking. Maybe go over my blue denim with a 1000 grit and then some pinstriping with a clear over top. Wish I could find a couple pics someplace. I guess a blue denim AC cover is only 50 bucks, better to experiment on that than my tank. But still $50 better spent elsewhere.
