Not pissing and moaning. Just stating the facts and my point of view on the fine.

I routinely travel 10 mph over the posted speed limit. Rarely do I travel faster than that. I also respect the fast and slow lane rules. If you're in the slow lane and want to go 10 under, than that;s your business. If I'm in the fast lane, I need to be traveling fast enough so that I'm not being passed by others on my right.

Also, the father of those little girls is an LEO. That's how I know how to act when I get stopped.

Mike
Now I'm not saying that speeding is right, but defense of Mike.In and aroundI-75you will get run over if you don't travel the speed of the traffic. You may have to exceed 90 at times to get over into a turn lane. The last time I drove through I passed my exit x4 before I could get over and I was well in the 90mph range, white knuckled and my passenger (from up north) didn't speak for nearly an hour.

Yea, the ticket is kinda steep though.
Thank you. However, no matter what you or I say, some people are not going to get it.

Yeah, I do think that $700 is very steep for 20 over but that's the way it's getting. And in a way I kind of agree.

I'm off the road for 30 days at the moment because I was doing 18mph over the speed limit, lost 6 points and the fine was approx. 680 US dollars.

That was in a cage....... won't be doing that again. That's for sure.

I don't personally give a **** about the 680 bucks, but I do about the 6 points and I do about the 30 days I can't ride my baby.

I would forget about the judge..... he's just gonna say, .....wait, you're gonna try and convince me the reduce a fine when you were cutting over 2 lanes with a kid and a baby in the back....... forget it dude.

As I said, it's a little excessive but in a way I kind of agree with hitting people with steep fines, 'cuz the next time they're gonna think twice....... I sure as hell will.

& I'm sorry Mike, 'cuz I know you don't need that kind of a fine at the moment.

Speeding tickets/fines are absolute bullsh*t revenue generators. They do ZERO for "public safety" Simply going fast does NOT mean you're driving dangerously. The people the cops should target are the ones cutting others off, driving slow in the passing lane, or generally driving in ways that can endanger others on the road. If you want to drive slower than traffic os moving, get the hell over to the right and let people pass. I do what Mike did all the time because here, there are too many "I'm driving the speed limit, so screw the rest of you" assclowns hold up traffic by puttering in the left lane, and I don't want to be one of them. If I'm passing a line of vehicles and I see a faster vehicle coming up on me qucikly, I step on it, finish passing and move over to let the faster vehicle by. I don't care if someone wants to drive faster than me, or slower than me.

And 700 bucks for going 20 over is nothing less than government sponsored robbery.[:@] Here's hoping it gets tossed or reduced significantly, Mike.

Cheers!

Im from GA and I can tell you this. You might as well pay the fine. First off if you fight it you will lose the time andlose whatever your time is worth and you will still pay the fine. Second if you hire a lawyer you pay the lawyer andstill pay the fine. Third if the judge is in a bad mood, she may raise the fine and add jail time (hear the banjos yet)? You WILL pay the fine...
Might as well pay it and get it over with.

And I have to say I doubt anyone with children are gonna "get it", because it seems you are the one who dont "get it" those kids aint yours and 90 mphis reckless indangerment. If the cop who is those childrens dad dont wanna kick your **** I would doubt his judgement. Thats just wrong anyway you slice it Mike.

This past weekend, I went to my brother's house in Nashville, TN to pick up two of my nieces. I keep them for a week each year. It's a blast! We have so much fun going to the Jacksonville Zoo, the Gator Farm, visiting family, and generally hanging out.

The are five years old and ten months old. You can imagine how traveling with them is a chore. The drive from my brother's house to mine can be made in eight hours, but with the girls, it'll take a little longer. We gotta stop to pee and feed the younger one every two hours.

On my way back from my brother's house on Sunday, I was passing through Tifton, GA on I-75. The older one said she had to pee and the 10 month old was starting to get really fussy. I don't have any children of my own, so I was beginning to unravel a little. We were going to stop by my Grandmother's house in Tifton for a short visit and were going to be there soon.

I knew the exit was coming up, but I wasn't really sure the exit number. All I knew was that it was 8th Street. I started seeing signs for Tifton and thought I should merge over.

I-75 is three lane right there and I was in the far left with my cruise control on 80 in a 70 mph zone. There was a line of trucks in the tow right lanes. I could've either slowed traffic by waiting for them to pass or pass them myself and keep things flowing smooth. I chose to pass them myself.

That choice got me the blue light special. The officer stopped me and a corvette at the same time. I was clocked at 90 mph.

The officer was very courteous. He asked me for my license and registration. I asked why I was stopped and he said, "You were doing 90 in a 70 with two little babies in the back."

I didn't argue or put up a fight. I was courteous right back to him and handled our affairs very businesslike. I never apologized or offered any explanation.

He handed me the citation and told me to call a number to find out how to pay my fine. There was no amount on it. I called on Tuesday and was connected with the Tift County Clerk's office. I was told the fine for that citation was $700.

I asked her if she was serious. She stated that she was. I asked her if there was a school I could attend to reduce the fine and she said no. The only way to reduce the fine would be to go to court.

Now, I'm all for people obeying the law and taking others' safety into consideration and I have no problem with owning up to my bad decisions. But $700 seems a little excessive. Looks like I'll be going to court over this one.

Hopefully the officer won't show and it'll be dropped, or I can plead my case and the fine will be reduced.

I wonder how many people in Tift County don't end up paying the fine and are driving around on suspended licenses?

The fine is so high because you were doing 90 mph plus.....I'd suspect that if you were doing 89 then the fine would be significantly different....I don't know that as fact....but I think so.

Thanks for the warning about the cost of speeding in GA. And I do know where St. Marys is. Good part of the country.

Was it at exit 59...?....were you in a work zone?....i know in houston county ga..depending on what department gives you the ticket...you may have to post bond to plead your case.....when you go to court on the date issued,,the judge asks you what your plea is & if you say innocent,,,you makes you post a bound bouble of the fine...that way you either pay the fine & move on...of come up with the bond then the schedule the officer for the following court dat,,,pretty screwed up...

The magic number is 20 MPH over the speed limit. Could have been doing 65 in a 45 and the outcome is the same. They could have confiscated the car, cited you for child endangerment, taken you to jail, whatever. Pay the fine and feel lucky. And yes, I also do 80 in a 70 zone here in California. I accept responsiblility for that. If others want to go 90+, that is their business and ticket, not mine.

Circumstances aside; the more I think abouta 5 year oldchildand 10 month oldinfant being in a vehicle going 90 mph, the more I find the situation to beinexcusable. If the father of said children is in fact LE, then I would hope that he too would be nothing short of outraged. He entrusted you with the care and well being of his kids. And I would bet that he didn't think that would involve their being in a motor vehicle doing 90 down the highway.
