You're right. What was I thinking? It's soooooooooooo cool to drive 90 mph with an infant and a child in the car. Silly me.

I take it you have never and I mean never once in your driving and new found riding career gone over the posted speed limit? Maybe endangering those around you?Something about a glass house and throwing stones comes to mind.

This ones gona play out like an oil thread with two sides. Instead of AMSOIL vs the world, I think this one will be fathers vs non fathers, or fathers vs irresposible dooshes.

I am not holier than thou, speed all the time, have driven after drinkin, and done all kinds of stupid crap EXCEPT when little kids are trusted in my care. Big difference and I'm glad I didn't send 5 bucks to this guy to go to Sturgis.

Fraid in my opinion you got what was deserved, although $400 seems more in order that $900. Why do you need to go 90? 60 behind a few trucks just until a nearby exit is no good reason to hit 90 and pass them.

For that kind of money, I'd be calling a lawyer. I don't know how it is there but in NC, anything over 15 can have your license revoked immediately.

AND.... if you get a ticket out of state for 15 or more, the revoking of the license will still apply in NC.

Ask me how I know... [:@]

This past weekend, I went to my brother's house in Nashville, TN to pick up two of my nieces. I keep them for a week each year. It's a blast! We have so much fun going to the Jacksonville Zoo, the Gator Farm, visiting family, and generally hanging out.

The are five years old and ten months old. You can imagine how traveling with them is a chore. The drive from my brother's house to mine can be made in eight hours, but with the girls, it'll take a little longer. We gotta stop to pee and feed the younger one every two hours.

On my way back from my brother's house on Sunday, I was passing through Tifton, GA on I-75. The older one said she had to pee and the 10 month old was starting to get really fussy. I don't have any children of my own, so I was beginning to unravel a little. We were going to stop by my Grandmother's house in Tifton for a short visit and were going to be there soon.

I knew the exit was coming up, but I wasn't really sure the exit number. All I knew was that it was 8th Street. I started seeing signs for Tifton and thought I should merge over.

I-75 is three lane right there and I was in the far left with my cruise control on 80 in a 70 mph zone. There was a line of trucks in the tow right lanes. I could've either slowed traffic by waiting for them to pass or pass them myself and keep things flowing smooth. I chose to pass them myself.

That choice got me the blue light special. The officer stopped me and a corvette at the same time. I was clocked at 90 mph.

The officer was very courteous. He asked me for my license and registration. I asked why I was stopped and he said, "You were doing 90 in a 70 with two little babies in the back."

I didn't argue or put up a fight. I was courteous right back to him and handled our affairs very businesslike. I never apologized or offered any explanation.

He handed me the citation and told me to call a number to find out how to pay my fine. There was no amount on it. I called on Tuesday and was connected with the Tift County Clerk's office. I was told the fine for that citation was $700.

I asked her if she was serious. She stated that she was. I asked her if there was a school I could attend to reduce the fine and she said no. The only way to reduce the fine would be to go to court.

Now, I'm all for people obeying the law and taking others' safety into consideration and I have no problem with owning up to my bad decisions. But $700 seems a little excessive. Looks like I'll be going to court over this one.

Hopefully the officer won't show and it'll be dropped, or I can plead my case and the fine will be reduced.

I wonder how many people in Tift County don't end up paying the fine and are driving around on suspended licenses?
dynamike74 the only reason i could think of for such a high fine is a construction zone. You may want to check with a liar..ah make that a lawyer about the actual wording, but i have had fines dropped substantially and no points on my DL by talking to the DA and pleading "guilty with explanation, no deposition needed, faulty speedometer." as for your last question about folks driving on the suspended list in tift county, lots. HTH and even though I have no plans on being GA anytime soon, thanx for the heads up

I'll not pass judgment since i have once upon a time driven I-75 and I-85 in GA for years, 90 mph at times can be an act of self preservation. Now to sit back and watch the show between those that think you're a bastage for driving that fast with little ones (that's between you and your brother), those that think the fines are thievery, and those that only skimmed your post and assume that you were weaving in and out of traffic with the kids strapped to your bumpers.

Hey Mike heres a link to SC's laws on this and a fee schedule. Here is a quote from Section 56-5-1520:
"(3) in excess of fifteen miles an hour but less than twenty-five miles an hour above the posted limit by a fine of not less than fifty dollars nor more than seventy-five dollars;"
You can also look up the violation statute number from the ticket to see exactly what he charged you with.

good luck!

Default RE: A little bit of an explanation

In VA anything 20 MPH over posted is cited as reckless driving and anything over 80 is automatically reckless as well. The thieves are also going to start charging an 'abuse' fee to drivers that get cited after July 1st and that can be up to 3000 for reckless driving or 2500 for DWI. The fee is attached to registration or license renewal and is IN ADDITION to any court assessed fines and penalties.

Its a racket and ripoff and we are the suckers that allow it to happen.
