Wow, you're a politicians dream. Let's make the fines start at $5,000 for 1 mph over and an additional $5,000 for every mile after that. He11, it's all about safety, not money. It's for "the children".I find it amazing thatit's about safety but they're moreinterested in catching some guy doing 80 on a straight away on an insterstate, and not bothering anybody, than the a-hole NASCAR wannabe zipping in and out of traffic at 80.They know it'seasier to just setup a speed trap on a straightaway and catchas many as they can.Oh, but it's about safety.Or when they purposelydrop the speed limit 20 mph in a 1/2 mile and setup speed traps there. Oh yeah, it's about safety.

What good is a law without teeth and wait for the insurance bill to increase too. The only thing that saved you from being haul away and car towed probably was the kids. I don't think it's a matter of what a state or towns make for money it's all about safety and if people don't care about their lives what about others that have no control.

So how didwe get the idea ingrained so deeply that "speed kills?"
I was thinking the same thing...

Apparently it's okay to run 70-75 with infants in the car but 90???

First, it was probably for a short burst to get around some cars but secondly, if you're gonna have an accident, I don't think 10-15 mph is going to create any more problems.

Some of you guys make it sound like he was recklessly whipping in and out of traffic, blowing around cars on the shoulder, blah, blah, blah...

For God's sake, he stepped on the gas to go around a band of trucks. He didn't say he cut anyone off, he simply was in the wrong place at the right time. He was speeding and got busted. He didn't complain about getting the ticket, he just thought it was excessive. (so do I)

I love it when someone tells a story of what happens and all the safety ***** come out and all the perfectos that have never been late on a payment, have never borrowed money, never done anything wrong, never speed....come out.

I'd love to see all the glass neighborhoods the majority of this board lives in.

Mike what do you expect when you are on a board ran by a bunch of Leo's ?
like they have never exceded the sepeed limit when out in their cruisers
sure you were speeding but you were trying to pass the line of trucks so you could slow down to take your exit . most of them would of done the same thing just to afraid to admit they would be in the wrong
was the fine excessive ?yes , but this day and age you just paid for coffee and donuts

My daughter got tagged with reckless driving for going 92 mph in a 65 mph zone in April. First offense in Oklahoma carries a maximum penalty of 90 days in the slammer and a $1,000 fine. Also it's a sh*t load of points on your driving record, insurance premiums skyrocket and the points stay on your record for several years. I hired a top notchattorney whopractices in the same jurisdiction where the offense occured. He has an outstanding reputaion and is good buddies with all of the local procecutors. Here's the deal. Six months unsupervised probation, court costs ($130),one day driving school ($100), attorney fees ($600). If she doesn't get busted for any serious infractions during the six month period, all charges will be dropped and it will be like it never happened. I think this is a hell of a deal. If she breaks the deal, she can spin the wheel because I'm not going to bail her out again. Frigging kids. Grrrrrrr. [:@]

I too know where St. Mary's is. Lovely. Sorry Mike that you got dinged so hard by the GSP. Their fines are always steeper than the local constabulary. Was it indeed a construction zone too? Did he add reckless driving to the ticket? Unless he did, that seems really high for just 20 over unless because the posted speed was already 70, that they dinged you really hard for going much over. Either way, you have my deepest sympathy from someone who buzzes up and down the Atl. GA interstates twice a day, five days a week, and pretty much 52 weeks a year, and who has a lead foot.

dynamike.. I understand what you are saying.. Have been there and done that.. I know that there has to be something wrong with the fine to be so much.. Reguardless of the speed. I have never heard of such a high fine.. You might want to check into that..

As someone that has driven I-75 through Tifton GA 18 times in the last 15 months,
I can offer these tidbits of personal knowledge / experience / insight.

#1 - Tifton GA, for years, has been and still is one of the most notorious speed traps on all of I-75.

#2 - The posted speed limit on I-75 through most of the City of Tifton is NOT 70 mph, but 55 or 60 mph.

#3 - Cruising in the far left lane, with large trucks in the right lanes, would make it difficult to see
the reduced speed limit signs when entering the city limits.

#4 - I-75 in southern GA has been under construction for the past several years.
Possibly there was an active construction zone when the OP was ticketed.

#5 - IMO there is more to this than has been revealed.

Just my .02

No I am not a safety **** but I am a retired firefighter who has seen what speed can do and I've responded to plenty of accident with kids not buckled up or in car seats. Just breaks your heart. Nothing was said about carseats and so I'll assume they were wearing them. Maybean accident might not have even be Mike's fault but at 90 and especially with the big trucks, the kids and Mike would have come out on the short end. Damage to cars increases exponentially ( knuckledraggers, that means it doesn't increase at the same pace but multiplys) with speed. All this whining about holier than thouneed to answer one question.....Was he exceeding the posted speed limit? By his own admission, yes ! So why is he surprised when he got a ticket? If he robbed a bank would he be surprised to go to prison? The old adage everybody does it is a lame excuse at best. Anybody who does it probably should have the money and be ready to pay the fine. Step up to the plate, quit bitching and paythe fine. Learn the lesson and go on about your business.

What did the Brother in law LEO have to say? I'd like to have heard that conversation.

If you can find fault with my friends website to help endangered animals your opinion of me is a good thing. If someone like you liked me I would be worried. And 90 is a lot different from 70 as far as crashs go. But you raise you kids the way you want and Ill raise mine the same.
Keep up the name calling you are painting a real nice picture of your
personality.
And I venture to say if we were face to face your tone would be a bit nicer. But carry on, I could care less if you make a fool of yourself.

screw up at 90 and someones dead.

So, what you're telling me is you're okay with someone running 70-75 with your kids in the car but not 90?

You honestly think 10-15 mph is going to make a difference? I assure you someone flipping a car at 70-75 isn't going to come out of that situation any better than someone running 85-90.

I am the farthest thing from a safty ****
No, actually you're worse. You're a damn tree hugger (according to your link to your website http://www.ace-ga.com/index.html and I quote
"The mission of Augusta Conservation Education is to inform the public of the importance of caring for our earth and all of its natural resources. We do this by performing conservation education shows. These demonstrations emphasize the importance of Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse.)

... that's right below a safety ****.

I'll bet people like you hate those of us that drive H2's also....

Speeding tickets/fines are absolute bullsh*t revenue generators. They do ZERO for "public safety"
I don't know.... I'll bet he don't go 90 through that area again..
and neither will anyone else who knows the fine... It would damn sure slow me down...
