Cleaning old loctite and rust off of bolts using my bench mounted wire wheel. One of the wires broke off the wheel and launched itself at my face, pinged off the edge of my safety glasses and lodged itself in my tear duct. was able to pull it out without any issues, but had I not been wearing the glasses it would have bullseyed my pupil and probably blinded me in that eye.
Its easy to forget to use safety gear, or think you won't need it for that 30 second grind or whatever. But better safe than sorry.
Fortunately at work we are required to wear safety equipment during certain activities. One requirement is safety toe boots. Couple weeks ago I forgot to put them on and was quickly reminded why they are required. Losing an eye would suck bad and glad you are okay.
Years ago, my Father in law did lose an eye to a wire wheel.
Some years later he had another incident with the other eye.
Lucky for him, he was the very first person to benefit from a new type of surgery that saved his eye.
He didn't come out of it without consequences though, he's still around at 92 yo and jokes that he's blind in one eye and can't see out the other.
Glasses alone don't cut it. Had a hot chip bounce off my cheekbone, off my glasses lens, into my lower eyelid. No permanent damage, but I REALLY felt that for awhile.

Good for you posting this, and a great reminder. Not wearing PPE has its consequences.
Years and years ago when I was a young, dumb, and full of c... er, young buck mechanic, I used the cutting torch to remove exhaust..... got a piece of hot metal in my eye.... trip to the ER, patch for a couple days, and still have a scar in my eye. Fortunately I have my vision. And wear my safety glasses. always.....
