Default To Octane Boost or Not??

This year it seems I’ve been running into more premium gas which isn’t so premium. Less power and pinging during acceleration. I haven’t changed my motor or Power Commander programming, so I would think it is the occasional crappy gas.

Enter Lucas Oil Octane Boost. I put 2 ounces in with a fill up and the bike has been running GREAT!! It is making more power, runs smoother, and all with no pinging. Conveniently a standard shot glass holds 2 ounces, so I carry a motorcycle themed shot glass with me in the saddle bag and the bike gets a “shot” of Octane Boost at fill up.

Am am I missing something? Generally you don’t get a plus without a negative. What is the negative side of boosting my octane?

Lucas is good stuff. Won’t hurt anything except your wallet. But I don’t think gas has changed any since last year. This time last year I was on a 2011 Road Glide Ultra that was extremely picky about fuel and had a terrible problem with pinging. It preferred Amoco Ultimate and, even then, I had to give it a shot of Lucas now and then to keep it from running ratty. Now I’m on a 2017 Heritage and it can’t tell the difference between fuels. It runs fantastic no matter where I buy gas. Both bikes are stock with slip on mufflers by the way. You say you haven’t changed your PC settings but maybe you need to. It shouldn’t be that sensitive to fuel. I should think the Power Commander would let you adjust for that. Unless you just like spending extra money on fuel.

Whatever works for you.

When possible, I run E0 premium, it's getting more and more common around here, bike runs fine on it. Also runs fine on E10 premium when I have to buy it.
Usually around 91 or 92 octane in both cases. Using an octane booster would just lighten my wallet a bit.

Get it professionally tuned and I would bet you wouldn't have to worry about it again. Plus the bike will run and better and cooler

My '13 Glide needs a shot of octane boost as soon as the ambient temps start approaching 100f even when filled with premium gas. My pinging occurs while at cruising speeds, I get none on acceleration even at 120F +, just at cruising speeds on the highway. I just use what ever octane boost that's available and try to keep a bottle or 2 on the bike when touring. The bike has been tuned a few times. I'm tired of chasing the perfect tune and tuner so octane boost keeps me happy and touring which was the reason for buying the bike.

I wonder if the octane booster is compensating for something else in your ignition system. If your bike is a few years old you may want to check your spark plugs and wires to make sure everything is OK. Maybe throw in a can of fuel cleaner while you are at it.
