Default Harley owner group question

So I have a question about if it is work join the national HOG group to join a local chapter. I bought my bike on a private sale so am not automatically enrolled in the nathion HOG. So is it work the annual dues to join the national and local chapters? Or rather what are the benefits over group rides?

Welcome to the Forum lots of great info here enjoy and learn from Stuart Fl. Ride a Lot Ride Safe. To me its not worth it to join when you try to use your card for a discount its never eccepted, your be better joining your local a 10 % discount at your local Dealer. National chapter is a waste of money i got threw my dealer when I bought my Bike it’s useless to me. Do a search on the site and read it

The two HOG chapters I belonged to, a national membership was a prerequisite.

HOG is what you make of it, the two I have been affiliated with were completely different groups. One was very busy with local rides, poker runs, had an eclectic membership population from 1% types to white collar types. The other group was mostly blue collar types with a smattering of white collars and no one, and I mean no one that was anywhere near the 1% types, they planned long rides, with great locations and did big charity events.

If you like riding in groups and enjoy multiple stops with imbibing in adult beverages and a modest structure governing the rides, HOG might be for you. I enjoyed some of the activities, but not all. Due to family obligations, work and just stuff, I didn't have time to become close with the members of either group. I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

Okay cool thanks for the responses I guess I was getting little confused to The aspect of the national and local chapters and on some places it says in order to be in a local chapter you have to be in national but not every place I look. So was getting little confused with that and then wanted to added aspects of some people that have been in them. Thanks again for your replies.

Absolutely the truth here. I was a charter member of a chapter back in the late eighties, really enjoyed it, my family enjoyed the activities, we got a lot out of it. I left the chapter in like 1993, came back to it in 2005, and man...how it had changed! But the change was commensurate with the change in attitude and culture of those who rode Harleys...I think that they approached HOG like some sort of Casper Milquetoast MC, which is how a lot of chapters seem to be run today...as judging from some of the comments I've read here on this forum. I lasted maybe four months, realized that it wasn't really my thing any more, my wife has no interest in joining or participating, so I just faded off into the sunset...

So, OP, as has been discussed, it's only valuable if it's YOUR thang. For me...and many others...I prefer to ride with just a couple of good friends, who actually know how to ride together. Or by ourselves...

I can tell you for a fact both the Seminole chapter and the Orlando chapter require National membership.

I belong to two HOG chapters and was an officer in one for almost 10 years and went to the HOG Officer Training several times. It is a requirement to be a National HOG member to become a member of any HOG chapter. Any HOG chapter that says or does otherwise is not following HD's rules and is hanging themselves and their members out to dry. Like all organizations, insurance is an issue due to the environment we live in. If something goes wrong during a HOG event and someone gets sued HOG has insurance to cover the chapter and involved members, however that is only the case if the chapter is following the requirements of that insurance which means following the rules handed down by National HOG. I'll stop there because I probably have said more than 90% of those reading this want to know

As for benefits, there are benefits from being a National Member such as the ATT discount mentioned, roadside assistance, etc. I'll let you read the info on the HOG website

For the local chapter, as said its what you make of it and what the chapter makes of itself. Each chapter has a personality from it's membership and the sponsoring dealer. There are some great chapters and some that frankly quite suck. Some have great backing from their sponsoring dealer and some that are at the point of war with each other. The two I belong to do ride a lot with multiple rides on weekends, a dinner ride or two during the week in the summer, and some overnight trips. The best way to find out if the chapter is for you is reach out and go to a meeting and see what they have to say. And don't be shy, speak to people and decide for yourself. I'd also suggest reaching out to more than one if they are close enough to you
