I was experiencing the exact same thing, had just had a full service and used a thicker than normal BelRay oil since I live in a hot climate. After explaining the problem to my mechanic he changed the fluid for a lighter Harley oil and the problem was fixed. it was only a £20 dollar fix and wasn't looking forward to opening up my gearbox...so very happy. Hope you have similar luck!

I would try honingut(cleaning out) the shifter linkage first to eliminate any sticking this can cause problems and is a 3 minitue fix ive had problems when i got dirt in the round mounts holder thinger in front thefoot shifter in place. just run a honingbrush or a rag through their to clean it out It might solve all your problems especailly if your shifting feels "sticky" Its avery common situation back home and that how i was shown and it fixedeverything. good luck hope this helps

My 80FLT has the same problem but i think its from up shifting without cluching
and the 168 thousand plus miles on her
........the speedo cable broke yrs ago....
But also if u dont get a good solid shift u can get caught between gears and pulling the clutch back in wil drop it in gear,bla bla bla....

mine was doing the same thing only in 4th gear then the shifter paw spring broke ,after replacing spring it shift perfect
