I'm going to be installing an Arlen Ness big brake rotor/kit on my 2019 Low Rider tonight and while the install looks simple enough, the service manual doesn't mention using loctite on the axle threads. It obviously has the pinch bolt on the left fork which I expect serves the same purpose to lock the axle in place (note it doesn't mention loctite on the pinch bolt either??)
What is recommended? On the pinch only, on both, or neither?
I use blue Loctite on both the axle nut and the pinch bolt. IMO, strong enough to hold, but not strong enough to cause problems. I've removed my front wheel several time for different reasons and haven't had an issue while using it.
Using a torque wrench is more important. Have heard they have bearing failures due to people over tightening. Though my first or second tire change, I tightened until my sphincter puckered.
I have thought about getting loctitie primer. I wonder how good of application most of us do. I chase it my finger nail, scrap with dental pic,but probably not as clean as it should be.
Whether the manual calls for it or not I always put a little Blue Loctite on every bolt I work with. That is unless it calls specifically for the Red or for anti-seize.
Ok. Manual definitely doesn’t mention it, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it elsewhere, so I guess if it was necessary, it would be there. I still may use a dot or two.
And i definitely use a torque wrench. Got a snap on I just had calibrated last ,moth so I’m good to go there.
Do smear anti-seize or grease on the axle itself before you put it together. The axle can corrode and bind to the bearing and spacers and make it really difficult to get out next time otherwise.
I ended up going with whats in the manual. No blue loctite in threads, just Loctite Silver anti-sieze (coincidental that this what was specified in the book and i happened to have a stick) on the axle. Job took no time.
