Why I suggested the primary chain.

Removing the primary chain inspection cover and poking in their boney digit to lift up and down on the primary chain would not be THAT far out of a task to complete.
It's free, and only takes a few minutes to do. No speculation, no guessing and you accomplish a maintenance task to boot.

IF then you still get the rattle can you can move onto a difficult task of tuning a carburetor..................which for a neophyte is a much harder thing to do.

Just my two cents.

I will do this this evening. On a different note, I realized yesterday that it DOES make the noise all the time, not just when I accelerate as I originally thought. It just makes it a little louder when I accelerate. I filled up with 93 yesterday evening, and while it didn't cure my noise, the ol' girl runs like she never has before! She'll really get up and go now.

Just found this over in the DIY section.. https://www.hdforums.com/m_67555/tm.htm Seems like too tight of primary chain could be the root of all of my problems, as i've been having clutch trouble too, if you haven't saw or don't remember the thread about it. Does the primary inspection cover come off with an allen wrench or is it phillips head? I don't remember..reason i'm asking is, i'll go out and check it out at lunch time if it's allen screws, as I have a set of allen wrenches in my bag on the bike..

If anything it would be a tad loose, the banging you hear is it flopping around in there.

Might be allens...........could be torx.

Didn't have anyone to hold the bike level for me tonight, and don't own a damn bike jack. I did loosen the primary inspection cover enough to get a little primary fluid to seep out, so I guess it isn't low on that. Hopefully this weekend I can get someone to help, or I will get innovative and come up with a way to hold the bike up straight..

I finally figured out what it was. My damn headlight.

So if you're ever getting a sort of 'rocks in a can' type sound, try putting your hand on your headlight (the glass itself, not the shell or the headlight ring) when it starts making the noise and see if it quits before you get to rebuilding that motor.
