Default Needed tools for DIY HD work.

If it's not too much trouble, could anyone make up a list of the most commonly used tools for doing your own work on a Harley?

I'd like to get a decent set of Craftsman tools but don't want to pay for a bunch of stuff I'll never use.

I'll start and throw out a few...

Torx socket set. Make sure it has a T27
HD filter wrench
3/8" ratchet
6" ratchet extension for the HD filter wrench
10mm socket

Complete set of allen and torx heads that will fit your ratchet plus a set of regular ones.
Good set of sockets that go to 1".

the most important tool is the manual, it lists everything you need, along with the specs.

Jim,

You will also need one of the neat little hand operated HD air pumps to set your rear shock air pressure on your '07 Ultra. They last forever -- I got mine in '91 to set the air pressure for the front forks of my FXRS-Con. Still using it on my '06 Ultra. The service manual shows the little air pump and part number.

Check out the tool kit that came with your Ultra. Most everything you need is in it. The screwdriver comes apart and has just about all the common bits, including the #27 that you will use frequently.

In addition to what the other folks have suggested, you will need some "crow's foot" sockets to check/tighten your critical fasteners. I like to check stuff like that at least once a year, and before a long trip.

Actually, one thing really makes a difference is keeping your battery cables clean and tight. I've seen more HD's beside the road with "electrical problems" that turn out to be loose or dirty battery cables. A 10 mm wrench, a green scrubby, and some vasoline will work well.

Oops --- I forgot that you will need a long shank, #3 cross point screwdriver to get the one screw out that holds your seat on. If you raise the tour pac lid, it is easy to get to. BTW, keep your Tour pac in the rear position or that one screw is a bear to get to.

I know you can get most of the above described tools at any hardware store such as SEARS,but to save money, try Harbour Freight.I also suggest getting the "FIX MY HOG touring edition" dvd along with the service manual.

I just got a pair of torque wrenches (in/lb and ft/lb) from Harbour Freight, and I've been really surprised at the "bang for the buck". I already had a more expensive ft/lb wrench and this HF model seems to be very close in calibration.
