Default Regular gas vs. High Test

Pulled a really dopey move yesterday...........rode into a gas station on my Harley Softail Deluxe to gas up and was not even thinking and filled up with reguler gas! Yikes, how will bike run on reguler gas after they tell you nothing but premium? Thanks.

Well..........you picked the right time of the year to do it. One of the main reasons that MOCO wants you to run premium is the simple fact that the higher octane runs cooler, and HD's are in fact air cooled.

DOnt sweat it. Just fill er up again with the hi test next time.

During hurricane Katrina that was all that could be had. My bike ran fine on regular. I did notice that the mpg did suffer a little but no pinging or knocking.

When gas went up I tried running regular in my '93 Sportster. It ran ok, but 'diesaled' when I shut it off. So I went back to premium. It took a little over a tank of premium before it stopped 'diesaling.'

Carb or fi? Doesn't really matter & doubt that you'll feel any difference but if you did then it would be with carbs before a fi system.

I have been running regular in my bike since the third tankful. It never ran bad. The TC is a low compression engine. It doesn't really need super.

Have run both in my bike, in-town and highway, various elevations, various temperatures, and the only difference I ever noticed was fuel economy. Better with the premium.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, just refiil with Premium and it should work itself out. Before long, you will be back to normal just like nothing had ever happened.

I have used regular on two occasions when I got caught low on gas and nothing else available. I just put in enough to get me to some premimum. Hasn't hurt anything that I can tell.

I don't make a habit of it, but I don't lose sleep over it either.

Regards,

Bill

Lower compression engines need a hotter fuel in order to burn the fuel mix efficiently. The lower the octane number the hotter the burn. Most TC and Evo engines are below 9 to 1 compression and shouldn't need more than 87 octane fuel, or 85 at higher elevations (because of less oxygen in the atmosphere even hotter burning fuel is needed). Why HD recommends premium for TCs I don't know.
