I’m sure this has been covered, but old thread info might be old. I moved 2000 miles to a new city (Las Vegas) and am thinking about joining the owners group, mainly because I don’t know any rides here. It might sound silly, but I don’t know what I’d get with an MC - at least the H.O.G. is likely to be just riding without shenanigans. What has your experience been?

You might have more fun with the HAs, or Mongols. But, I don’t know if they are still angry with each other. Ya might want to start a thread on that.

Yeah I know. I can be such an ******* sometimes.

Each chapter runs differently. Mine is pretty active (I am the assistant director), and we usually have rides every weekend during riding season. We also ride with other local chapters as well. Speaking for my chapter, we have about 120 on the rolls, and about 60 or so active riders, so we usually get a pretty good group when we plan a ride.
There are some amazing rides out that way, and its on my bucket list. I am sure that the local chapters out there are pretty active. Looking at the map, there are two local ones: One on Las Vegas blvd, and one in Henderson. I know nothing about either of them, But here is a link to their sites:

Black Mountain HOG Chapter in Henderson doesnt appear to have a website, but LV does:

You might also try ABATE:

Or the local CMA chapter. If your ex Military, there’s bound to be a riders group to join.

AFAIK, there aren't many roads once you leave Las Vegas. You have 93 (aka I111) to Kingman, I15 to Utah and California, Mt Charleston, 95 to Beatty and Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam and 160 towards Pahrump. Secondary roads in Nevada are sparse and long in desolate scenery.
If'n I was contemplating joining Hog, I would act like a prospect and hang around for a meeting or two to see if you like what you see.
Summer riding in Las Vegas is uncomfortable, get back home before 10am.

I'm also from Vegas. You should look into Meetup.com. There are a handful of motorcycle meet up groups here in Vegas. Some are MC, most are guys just looking get together for some rides.

I’m a member of my local group. They are a great group of people. No pressure to attend meetings or ride but it is there if I ever want it. When I do go to meetings it is always a good time .

+1. Very good advice.

HOG Chapters are mostly all about riding, but many do a lot of charity work and do other social activities. Look up the local Chapter websites and check out their calendar to see their ride and activity schedule.

You have to like group riding and riding within speed limits as the HOG groups do normally follow the rules as set forth by mother HOG and the dealer the chapter is associated with. And you have to like to eat . Most HOG rides are to a breakfast or lunch destination.

Like most organizations, you get out of it what you put into it. Particiapation is key as a HOG Chapter membership is only as good as what you make of it. If there is an "other Half", HOG is very couples oriented and the Ladies of Harley do a lot.

As an aside, just know that like all organizations, there are internal politics you need to put up with. The elected officers can make a Chapter a group you want to belong to or they can make it unpleasant. So, as noted, above, take the advice to visit the local Chapter(s) meetings for a month of so before joining.

Also, and JFYI, there is also the non-formal group known as the Southern Cruisers Riding Club that have local chapters all over. They are a free, no dues, family oriented riding club that doesn't care what brand of motorcycle you ride. Just go to southerncruisers.net to join.

I ride alone. Sometimes my boy and I will go out.

More people = more bullshit

I tried a HOG meeting. My dealership has one of the biggest HOG chapters in the country. They started the meeting with the pledge of allegiance which I haven't done since I was a kid. That was the highlight of the meeting.

There was supposed to be some kind of content or teaching. Some former paramedic did what seemed like an extemporaneous presentation on bike safety/first aid? I'm not really sure what it was about. It kinda felt like visiting a church for the first time. Anyhow, glad I didn't join prior to checking out a meeting. Just not my thing.
