Default Custom fabrication question...

Okay guys, here it is. I am going to be fabbing some sort of bracket for my saddlebags from an older heritage to fit my newer fatboy (02). I am thinking of using some flat aluminumbent at a 90 degree angle for the top two pieces, but am stumped on what to do for the piece that mounts to behind the passenger footpeg. I do not plan on carrying anything too heavy in the bags, but I do plan on putting them to use. I don't have a whole lot of tools to do this so I am trying to keep it simple as well. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated as I have never fabbed anything before. Thanks.

One other option I have is to get ghost brackets or easy brackets, and then try to make them fit somehow. I am not sure which one of these ideas will be simpler or easier and am not sure which to go with.

Anubiss,

I take off my saddlebags every time I wash it - I can take some pictures of the brackets and mounts - if it will help you.

A couple of things we may need to know:

Passenger floorboards or pegs on your bike? (There are 2 types of mounts.)

Do the Heritage bags have the metal bracket on the back of the bag already? If so - fabrication may be simple.

Please inform.

A note on the Aluminum. If it is thin enough that you can bend it to 90 degrees, it will not be strong enough. Aluminum is prone to stress cracks. To bend it correctly you would need to heat it, but this is not as easy as it sounds. It does not react the same as steel. I suggest you search on the internet and see how companies are making these kind of brackets. In American Bagger I believe there is an advert for attaching hard bags to a Fat Boy. Check this out and maybe copy their design.

Hey Anubiss, If you figure out what you need and draw it up I'll whip one up for ya. I'll do it outa steel though, Trubrit is right about bending aluminum.
Heck, I'll even toss into the powder coat box. Black ok?

Wow, thanks for the help guys. I do not have the metal brackets on the back of the bags. I will have to figure out how to draw this up. I am going camping on sunday for the week and most likely won't figure this out until I get home. My bike has passenger pegs, not floorboards.

Hey Anubiss......

Are you going to relocate your turn signals or do you want to leave them there?

The fender brackets should be the same as the Heritage - the stock mount would work on your bike - but you'd have to relocate the turn signals.....just a thought....

The signals have already been remounted. My only concern is that the bags are off an earlier model and I don't know if there is a difference between the brackets sizes etc on these models.

If you can get some thin aluminum say 1/8" and bend it to just what you need the bracket to be then lay itdownona sheet of 1/4" graph paper then take a good quality photo from strait above this will help any one trying to make a bracket. Also if their are compound angles more shots may be needed to show all the bends, you also need to be able to see the grid pattern. Ive had to work off these a couple of times when our road crew needed something made and were going to be out of the shop for several day's

You can bend aluminum if you make a radiused bend. Bend it around an 1 1/2" pipe so that you get a sweeping curve and it usually won't crack.
