Default Seat questions

After our recent trip and the "monkey butt" we went thru, I am wondering what all the hoopla is about wth reguards to factory seat vs. after market seats.

When I bought the bike I knew the seat that was on it would not serve me well so I ordered the Harley Tall Boy seat. It was wider taller and set me back a little more, so I thought......man that should work perfect!! Well now I am having second thoughts and wondering why are after market seats so much better?
I mean.......overall demensions appear the same, surface looks the same on the internet, and I assume the foam used is most likely the same. So I am asking for someone to try and explain to a newby what it is that brings people to by any after market seat, and what they found was so much better then what they had before?
I am considering a Mustang Seat, but I would be getting it through the internet and that part scares me........I hate the thought of sinking $300 + bucks to find out its not all that and a bag of chips ya know??

Any input here would be great.

The major difference is the foam. For whatever reason, guess to save a nickel or too, factory bikes don't use the best quality foam in their seats.

You won't be dissatisfied with the quality and comfort of a Mustang touring-type seat. You might be disappointed with the seating position, depending upon which seat you get. Do a search of the forums for Mustang or Corbin. You'll pull up enough info to keep you busy for a spell, and get some info to help you make a decision.

I have been through a few seats myself and have decided to go back to my original seat. The Heritage seat looks the best plus the GF likes the pillion better. I bought a sundowner with driver backrest and was disappointed since it slides me too far forward. Seat comfort depends alot on your sitting posture. I tend to slouch so the driver backrest did not contact my back very comfortably. So I'm going back to the original and buy me a Airhawk cushion....I heard alot of goods things about them.

Aside from exhaust, seats seem to be the most discussed topics on chat boards. You will fint 1,000 opinions. I personally love Corbin seats. They are firm, but offer great back support. I have had several, over the years, and will be ordering the Gambler once it is available for my Street Glide.

I am having the same problem and am going to send my stock seat in to get the gel pads with the memory foam installed in it. I am hoping this will take care of the Monkey Butt. If not will check into a different seat all together.

I have a Corbin dual-tour seat that my wife and I both enjoy. Before that I had a Mustang seat. The Mustang seat was comfortable but would push me forward and rob me of legroom that my 6'4" frame needed. Both seats are quality, but if you're tall, go for the Corbin. I ordered both of my seats over the internet.

if you are on a longggggggggg ride get the lambskin and put it on your seat ........no monkey but then and you can ride forever, that is why you see it on a lot of long distance riders seats!!!!!

The biggest difference for me between the stock Badlander seat and the BAR Industries Hitchhiker I bought for my Night Train is the maximum amount of time I can ride before my *** goes numb. With the Badlander it was about 2 - 3 hours. I haven't found the max yet with the Hitchhiker, and I've put in over 7 hours (stopping for gas and food, of coruse) at times.

Cheers!

Just gotta chime in for the Sundowner. Wife & I really like it. We do some long rides with no discomfort. Had a Mustang on my last bike and loved it, can't really tell much difference other than the price. The Sundowner is a lot less. I've got the rider backrest as well.
