Default internet tire sales - side business opp???

I was chatting with a couple friends last week and the same topic came up. If you buy motorcycle tires over the internet where do you get them mounted?

There is no one around here that will mount tires thay don't sell. Several dealers have signs as you enter the parts/sevice counter stating will only mount tires they sell.

I'm wondering if this could be a small little (& profitable, of course) side business.

A quick google search led me to this company. http://www.nomartirechanger.com/?gcl...FQNvHgodYwZ1HA

I thinking $20 or $25 per tire.

Any opinions on the idea or the machine?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Its kinda strange the dealers wouldn't mount them. They still charge thier same hourly rate and with just mounting they would get a minimum of a hour(some have 1/2 hour min).

If you want them to dismount/remount the tires from the bike it would be even more time. Also gets the bike in the shop where they can sell more work or services. (oil change,PM service, etc)

Dealers round here don't even flinch when you ask to have a tire mounted, have actually seen them pull a tech off a service to do it.

They do it for safety reasons. A failure on a tire they mount but did not sell. They have no idea where it came from or what the history is. i have never seen a shop change a tire they did nto sell in a long time.

Well first you are goi to need a better machine then that if you are doing tires for a living. You would be lucky to dismount a tire on that machine in 5 minutes. Then you have to install the new one. They sure want to make it like that machine is a miracle machine but it is not. The tire they are changing on that thing is the easiest in the business. Wide, but not to wide.
All the machine really is is a Coats 220. Nothin special. most your tire places were gettin rid of the Coats machine 15 years ago. They are prown to scratching a wheel too.

Then you will need an electronic balancer, handy lifts, couple jacks, weights, and knowledge on how to use all the eqiupment properly. Not to mention that you will need a retail center or industrial shop to do it in.

sounds like a way to make money but when you break it down... It really will not be profitable. That is only covering the basics.

My local HD shop will mount and balance, as will the 2local independents and the Honda shop.

Price is from 20 to 25 dollars per tire off of the bike.

My local Indy was mounting and balancing for $35 each tire, carry in/carry out or 1 hr. labor per tire if you bring the bike in.

I don't know about if my harley stealer would do it (haven't been there for anything yet), but if you take just the wheel and new tire to be mounted to just about any motorcycle shop or indy they will mount it for $25 - $35. I had both the front and rear wheelsmounted at the Yamaha dealer for $35 a couple of years ago.

I haven't had that experience. My dealer mounted a set of Metzler's for me during my 10K service. He simply charged me the hourly rate they get for changing Dunflops. He did make me either supply or buy tubes and rim strips (wire wheels) as they wouldn't use the old ones. However, their prices were the same as J&P, Dennis Kirk, etc. Part of this may have been due to the Dunlop strike but they said they would install a Metzler replacement rear tire when the time came and I can get the tire myself. I was in an Indy in PCB, FL last weekend. He had a special where he would mount and balance a set of Metzler 880's on my FXDL for $350 including tax. He showed me his mounting and balancing equipment which was state of the art. I ordered my Metzlers on-line (RonAyers Motorsports)--great price/quick delivery. But, I didn't save much more than what the Indy would have charged for in-stock units. I think some of the dealers are now carryingbrands other than Dunlop or Michelin (such as Avon and Metzler) but I could be wrong--usually am according to my wife.
