iPhone 11 users, camera do wavy videos while riding?
Rt now Ive had a iPhone X for several years and its mounted on my handlebars in a good place to record videos. But when I try to do videos or even a still pic, its all kind of wavy and makes for a very poor recording.
Actually think the camera just prior to this one did the same, might have been a 8, but the prior iPhones always did great recordings.
so thinking of moving up to the 11 but really interested if the 11 does this wavy thing or does good videos while mounted on the bike. Any input on this is appreciated.
Ive read that this wavy problem might be solved by taping a small piece of magnet to the upper rt corner of the phone but thats a crappy fix in my mind.
Moderators, I accidentally posted this first in the club room. Can that posting be deleted? Tks.
even at it's best, is that camera really made to deliver the kind of picture that you are hoping for?
Wouldn't you be better off with an action camera like a GoPro? The newer ones have amazing stabilization technology.
Keep your phone in your pocket in case you and the bike become unexpectedly separated.
As to a magnet hack on an Iphone, sounds far fetched, but I've heard stranger things.
I have a GoPro but dont regularly have it on the helmet. My phone is tethered to my bike and now and then Im on a stretch of highway Id like to have a video of. My earlier iPhones did a decent job of videos while mounted to the handlebars.
Actually read numerous places that the magnet gig did work. Suppose to lock in the stabilizer or something but Im not looking to go that route. Stranger hacks have happened.
I tried recording with my iphone 6s and it was wavy. I wrote it off as the camera didn't know whether to focus on my windshield which was partially in frame or on the road. Each video looked wavy like excessive heat in the desert wavy.
The "wavy" thing that you describe is normally a symptom of damage to the camera module caused by too much vibration - which is normally caused by mounting it to the bars of a motorcycle.
The camera modules in these modern phones use an image stabilisation technique that kind of has the lens floating and held in suspension by magnets. It works well to reduce slow vibration such as that when you are hand holding the phone to take video of stills. However repetitive, fast sharp vibration like when you mount it to a bike's bars will kill the camera module quite quickly.
It's basically fecked and you need the camera module replaced.
Best advice is NOT to mount a new model iPhone (or other phone using optical image stabilisation) to your bike's bars unless you have a mount that removes the vibration. Even then, I wouldn't chance it. I have had this happen to two phones in the last couple of years, and although Apple has replaced the cameras under warranty, I no longer mount the phone to the bars.
A dedicated action camera and/or bike GPS unit will serve you better in the long term....

Thanks for this info. Explains this to me. Shucks.
Why don't you wait a couple of months and get a 12. It's supposed to be available in October and will be 5G.
Well, like all stuff, in a few months even the 12 will be old. Have been having some issues with my X so think I need to do this sooner than later. I'm ok with 4G, cant imagine how much faster this all can get. Got a 11 Pro today. They had a decent deal, some loyality deal, $350 trade in on my old phone. So done deal now. Tks
