When I graduated high school my parents got me a Kawasaki H1. I didn't have a license for a cage yet.
I rode it to school, UNLV, for three weeks during which time I always put a dog choke chain collar through the rear wheel. I knew where it was parked there wasn't much chance of it being lifted into the back of a truck.
Then I was late for class one day and didn't use my 'security' chain. A hour later I left my class to discover my scooter was gone. The police found the frame a few years later.
Back then Kawasakis had the key code stamped on the triple clamp. I've always suspected someone saw the code, bought a replacement key, and checked every day to see if my 'security chain' was in use?
It is possible someone just happened to be looking for a scooter to steal, but that would have been quite a coincidence.
My point is that sometimes even minor "lock stuff" may help. Of course there are other factors such as location, people in the area, etc..
