Wondering if putting up a set of 510 s&s cams in my Softail Deuce 88 cubic inch would help in horsepower without doing any head work and if so what kind of gain maybe if someone could help appreciate it very much thank you ahead of time!

Todays conventional wisdom says use 509
20 years ago there was NO 509 and the 510 was recommended as the Bolt in cam for 88
So I put a gear drive set in my 99 RK ( primarily to avoid the bearing issues that plagued the first TC s)
It ran smoother and less labored at higher rpm. Pulled more freely to redline, less tight
if that translates.
No dyno, no numbers but it was a worthwhile upgrade and my bike is heavier than yours.
Some say youll lose some power down low
probably true but I never noticed
Ran until 2019 when I upgraded to 98 with 570s , heads etc

Thanks for your input,I appreciate it! not really concerned about a lot of horsepower more so just to be able to get around a car a little bit quicker than it has been at stock got to do something thanks again
I have 509's, a similar cam, and from what I remember it was not a huge gain in hp.
My buddy had 510's, and he said they worked better in higher revs.
Either way, you will not be dissapointed, the 509/510 series really wakes up the bike above 2800 without giving up bottom end torque
bolt in cam, not a lot of worry about spring rates, excellent power for not a lot of money.. the bike will pull like a freight train when you go to pass another vehicle, don't be afraid to downshift and get the revs up, it will pull past 5000 without dropping power on the top end
My brother put 510Gs in his carb'd '04 Heritage when it was new. He got more power on the top end but wished he'd gone with more of a torque cam. I think the best cam for a stock 88" is the Andrews 21, which will pull hard from idle to the top end. He has Andrews 21s in his 88" Ultra, and it's a strong runner.
I have 510s in my 06 FLSTC and theyre ok. If the 509s were available then, thats what I would have installed. Now that I have a 97 inch big bore kit in it, Im probably going to install 583 EZ start cams.
