Default The FBI??

So, want to find out if my local dealer is full of it or not. I went in to get a lock for my new-to-me Rushmore Tour Pak. Knew going in I would need the code off my key. The sales guy said to order the lock they'll need a copy of my ID, an official affidavit filled out and signed with my full legal signature PLUS a copy of my registration. I was blown away. For a lock?? He gives me some song and dance about the FBI walking around just looking for these kinds of sales to investigate.

I try my hardest to avoid the dealer, but this kind of purchase it was unavoidable. My local dealer was recently bought out by a big time local car dealer and this place has gone down hill fast so it wouldn't surprise me if this was just a dealer only policy.

Damn. All it took to get a lock for my TourPak was my key code, which my dealer already had on file. The sales guy's FBI statement sounds like BS to me though.

I had to produce the same thing to order a key fob my wife lost for our SUV. Just a precaution to prevent theft. Dealer seems a bit over the top about someone spot checking their procedures though.

I'm would be happy they want proof of ownership. Anyone could get a key to your pack.

OP the dealer didn't remember you from selling you the bike? I would find a new dealer.

Had to show proof of ownership (title or registration) to have a key ordered when I didn't have a key with the code on it on me. But no ID or signed affidavit. The times I had the key on me they just ordered a set of keys.

It's been ~5 years, but my dealer sold me the bike and knows me, none of that BS when I ordered matching locks for my bags.

Our requirements are current proof of ownership and photo ID. The proof of ownership (title, registration, or insurance policy) proves ownership and provides the VIN which is required to order a key. The statement about the FBI is horse flop. He might have been misinformed. The FBI has better things to do than randomly audit key requests from dealers. Your local police would certainly look into your dealer if it turns out that motorcycles in your area are being stolen. We have a "note" field on our receipts where we state that all documentation was provided at the time of the sale for any keys. Kind of a CYA procedure.

The dealer replaced the two locks on my saddle bags last year under warranty. Dropped the bike off, they did the service, ordered parts and I picked it up with two extra new matching keys.

Never asked me a single thing. Of course I purchased the bike new from them if that matters?
