You already messed with it, just not on purpose. You can't hurt anything by putting it back to where it was. If you don't have the instructions you can get them from V&H or online.
Did you accidentally get a battery with too much ethanol in it? If so, I've heard that adding some blinker fluid to it might help solve the problem.
