2 things that i see that are problematic with the airtag.
first, if the thieves have iphones, they'll get an alert that an airtag is 'traveling' with them. and second, once they find the airtag, they can scan it with their phone and get your contact information. which means they'll know what house to go to to steal more good stuff.
There is a bar that we go to and they have video of bike thieves . 4 guys with sections of pipe and they would run them though the wheels and load them up in a enclosed trailer. Another video of 2 guys pulling up with a pickup truck with a greased sheet of plywood and just laying the bike down and sliding the bike in the truck. I even talked to a guy at a bike shop and he told me they took his bike away at a stop light at gun point. They had the drop on him and felt pretty screwed at the time. They did catch them though. I walked away from my bike back in 91 for 70 seconds and it was gone. Padlock on forks too. Walked in a bought a beer and walked back out, just that fast !
Many ways for them to get your bike, so make it as hard as you can for them.
