I doubt the mini apes caused the carpal tunnel. maybe the position your hands/arm are in causes the symptoms to appear, but it isn't likely the bars caused the condition. I've had carpal tunnel surgery in both hands, alner nerve surgery in right elbow, cervical spine disc removed and fuzed with cadaver bone, rotator cuff surgery... You're going to have to find some bars that put you in a position that is comfortable for you, and for me the best bars I've foundare the mini apes.
Being that your bike is a 2000, your motor ain't rubermounted, so you're going to want to get every bit of vibration dampening between your wrists and those bars. Gel gloves, iso grips, etc. Another thing that should help is repositioning the bars if possible. Did you have any adverse effects with your stock bars?
I was diagnosed with CTS years ago, and when it came to getting a Harley, I made sure it was an 04+ for the rubber mounted motor. Otherwise, my hands would be number than a corpse on Halloween.
Another thing that slows the effects of CTS is making sure you take a multivitamin. 100% of your daily values of vitamins B6 and B12 can really dampen the effects. Use anti-infammitories when in pain, and even consider wearing a sweatband around your wrist for added support.
Carpal tunnel syndromeis causedfrom holding your wrist in a bent position for long periods. It actually kinks the tube that protects the nerves that reach into your hand. Typing or keyboard work for long periods of time (for instance) is often a culprit that will cause this to happen because the wrist is held in one position for too long.
Riding your bikeis probably not the cause ofthis but it can certainly aggravate the condition. I know I have had to experiment to find a comfortable position to prevent myfingers from going numb and pain down my forearms.
Try holding your wrist in different position (trying to keep the wrist as straight as possible). This will minimize the aggravation to those already aggravated nerves. Thereare also wrist supports that will help keep your wrists from bending so much ... although they are hard to wear when you ride.
And to add to that, the repetitive motion of typing is also an underlying factor, which is why most people suffering from carpal tunnel also happen to spend long hours at a keyboard. It's not a coincidence. That said, take the keyboard off your mini-apes....
