I find this type of thinking to be very interesting. Because in every motor generation you get this scenario: "I got a stage 1 and now it runs like a raped ape!" You would see this all the time on the forums for years.
With 80 CI bikes, with 88CI bikes, 96, 103, 107, etc. The stock 103 produced way more power than a stage 1 88, for example. Why weren't people saying it runs like a raped ape with a stock 103?
Personally I think the 114 is more than enough power for my Road Glide Limited (referred to by my wife as the "Loud Couch").
I think if you want more than that, its a choice, but not a criticism of the MoCo if you want to do that.
Regarding sound, you see a lot of people posting that they don't want anything too loud. So it's appropriate for Harley to set a baseline and people have options from there.
Speaking from MY experience, the dealer installed Stage 1 didn't do anything for the performance or rideability of my EFI '04 Road King The engine still surged at cruising speeds and misfired when accelerating off idle. The engine didn't run right until I installed a Power Commander. Even though the engine ran nicely with the PC, it still lacked adequate power for passing at highway speeds.
Anyone who says their Stage 1 88 runs like a raped ape, hasn't tried to pass vehicles on a two lane highway. A Stage 1 88 has no top end power.
I know the 96" engines got better heads, so the MoCo must have been thinking about improved top end power, over the 88, when they designed that engine.
