Did you recently lube the front brake lever or the clutch lever/cable? Could be some excess oil dripping back.. Also, check the brake master cylinder for any wetness...
do fluids fall anywhere but down in your neck of the woods?
where do you keep? look up
under a tree? maybe tree sap
in your garage? maybe your wife is hiding a dead body in the garage attic, dead body juice is probably pretty nasty stuff <shrug>
if it's coming off the bike, i can't think of anything under the seat or on either side that could be throwing fluids up that far
Yep, it's garage kept. Nope, no wife so no dead body in the attic. I can't think of anything either (or find anything) but your statement about "on either side" does narrow things down. It's obvious it's from the right side as the evidence is always on right side of backrest, and yesterday also on right side of seat.
Got an old white towel you don't need anymore? Wrap it around your right leg with a little tape . Go for a spin and see if you get anything on it. Color, smell and area might give you a clue.as to what you are dealing with.
Air cleaner spitting oil? Dipsticks tight? Oil spots anywhere else? Got a fork leaking?
I thought about the air cleaner too since I used to notice a few spots of oil occasionally on the engine cover under the air cleaner. Even then it never blew back onto backrest. I ended up following the advice of others and taped a folded half paper towel to the bottom inside of my air cleaner cover and that took care of the problem. I pulled the cover again yesterday and the towel was dry as can be and no evidence of oil blowing. I put a different dipstick in the oil tank yesterday, haven't ridden again yet since but not optimistic about that cause I didn't see where any oil might be blowing out from there. Hadn't thought about forks, haven't noticed anything but would think if fork was leaking, the fluid would be also in other spots before all the way to backrest. Thanks, I'll look into forks closer.
Does your bike leak oil from breather bolts or airbox?
It used to but even then it never ended up on backrest as I recall. Possibly it did but whenever that happened I could easily see the issue and oil would drip from air cleaner cover after the ride. I solved that with paper towel taped inside bottom lip of air cleaner. I check cleaner cover yesterday (after ride that spotted the seat and backrest) and it was dry as can be.
Check your fork caps. They might be lose and leaking.
Had this happen on an old Honda of mine. Got fork oil all over a new shirt and the bike.
Also check the front brake fluid reservoir for leaks.
