Default Does 3M VHB primer harm paint?

I put a set of saddlebag lights on using 3M VHB primer prior to applying the lights. They are the typical LED strips that run under the lid on the back of the bags. Anyway, I was thinking about switching to the newer, thinner style strips but am afraid the paint may be damaged from the primer and look like crap after removal. I’m not worried about the removal process, as a heat gun and fishing line will get the VHB tape off, but as said, I’m worried about what the primer may have done to the paint.

Any idea?

Well I guess I’ll be the one to answer this for the next guy when I try…

I don’t have experience, but my guess is you’ll be fine. Maybe some low heat, slow and easy with the fish line.

I’m not worried about getting the tape off, my concern was what the primer may have done to the paint itself. The primer (at least the delivery system I got from 3M) is in a little glass ampule in a cardboard tube with a brush-like applicator on one end. You crush the glass which saturates the applicator and then brush is on the area. After it dries you apply the VHB. When it dries it leaves a hard hazy white residue. That was my concern. I’ve removed dozens of reflectors, badges, etc. before and never had a problem - I’ve just never tried with the primer. That’s the reason for my post.

Once I get the new lights, I guess I’ll find out!

Yeah, I get it. I would probably have researched and considered that in advance. Paint is pretty tough. I hope you’ll be okay.

Good luck and keep us posted.
